Post subject:  Quidditch, anyone?
Two weekends ago, my wife insisted that we go see the Western Regional Quidditch Cup Tournament. It was ... interesting. I even volunteered to be a snitch, but thankfully, they had already filled the slot for that game. These kids all have 30 years on me, I'm sure it would have been a short game.

Heh. If they want to lobby for legitimacy, perhaps the first order of business should be fixing the retarded scoring.

Do that, and lose the brooms (I'd even say substituting some other "personally ridden" form of transport, like skateboards or BMX bikes might even enhance its draw), and maybe we'll talk. Until then, it's as much LARPing as it is a sport.

Hey, don't dis' this! My 6-year old scored a goal in the kids' pickup game they played, and I have high hopes for him to get a scholarship in 12 years.

I didn't pick up a LARP vibe at all, and I've done some LARPing. The guys from Utah took it way seriously. You could tell there were a couple of frustrated intramural flag-football types.

But, yeah, I still don't get the scoring. Actually, each game went until the Snitch was caught, or 30 minutes. Catching the snitch is not "the only way to end the game." As usual, the reporter has his head up his ***.

And, farther up the colon:

Um, no. There were, I think, three bludgers. Maybe two, but certainly more than one. It all got kind of chaotic as the bludgers started flying around, I will admit.

The larping comment was in reference to the insistence that it must be played astride a non-functional flying broomstick.

Like I said, lose that, and take the points value of the snitch way down (from the values in the books, they may already have done so) so the entire game doesn't hinge on "the seeker who catches the snitch single-handedly outscores the rest of the game combined," which makes for dramatic tension in a novel starring a wizard who happens to play a seeker, but a lousy team sport. Then we'll talk about considering it legitimate. =P

In the Goblet of Fire, during the Quidditch World Cup Viktor Krum caught the snitch, and his team still lost.

Beat me to it Mus, and his team lost because the other team was outscoring them badly. Catching the Quidditch kept it from being even more embarrassing than it would otherwise have been.

Yeah, but "outscoring badly" ends up being "leading by like 150 points, over the course of 4 days" or whatever it was.

According to the novels, that's accurate. The game continues until the snitch is caught.

A random guy or gal for neither team runs around in yellow with a yellow sock and a tennis ball attached to their backside. The seekers need to catch the sock and tennis ball.

Yeah, but in this version, the games were 30 minutes long, or until the snitch was caught. I mean, they had loudspeakers announcing this stuff. I was there for five minutes and figured it out.

You're too kind!

For the snitch in the kids' game, the guy doing it was about 13, maybe? Had a lot of cardio going on, I think he ran full on for 20 minutes. They kept giving other kids the chance to be seeker, so they had fresh legs all the time, but none of them could catch him. It was impressive.
