Okay, I'm hooked. I love cellular algorithms. They appeal to my fascination with patterns. I've come up with a few (like this so far that are pretty neat riffs by just approaching this as something to seek out either cyclic or self-perpetuating patterns; surprisingly decent melodic composition and appealing syncopation. Unfortunately, due to the rulesets, the number of active cells doesn't fluctuate, so it's not possible to create "guns" as in other algorithms. They could have been used pretty cleverly to actually duplicate existing music. It's interesting to create a stable riff that repeats that you like, and then interject just one or two additional cells in such a way as to disrupt it and create something progressively evolutionary. The rules of the algorithm mean that elements of the original riff tend to persist for a good while, as the beat or sequence mutates while only interjecting a few new notes.. |

I agree that the ruleset is more limited than the game of life, but it's still possible to create oscillaters/movers. Here's my first shot at doing that. If you directly edit the URL (with a little trial and error) you can stack and turn enough blocks on top of each other where the pieces start taking on a little more life. (When pieces are on top of each other it at least "looks" like blocks are being created and destroyed) This little guy, made of two "rights" and three "downs" on a single square, wanders from one side of the board to the other and plays a tune each time. http://www.earslap.com/projectslab/otomata?q=5k5k5l5l5l |
