So, this is my first full day in my new house, in McAllen, TX. I drove here the last 3 days from Elyria, OH. Thank goodness that part is over. Unfortunately, the family is not yet with me since the 2 older daughters have school to finish and my oldest has college orientation on the 29th of June, so sadly, they won't be here for 2 more months. Still, it's a nice place. All on one floor, but still bigger than our old house. It has air conditioning! We only had room air conditioners before. The floors are all brand new tile, and the back yard is bigger with a very nice roofed patio, and an unroofed portion for my grill. It's just the right size for children to play without being a ton of mowing, and is fully fenced. The master bedroom actually has sliding glass doors onto the patio, as does the living room. The neighborhood is pleasent enough; a heck of a lot better than the hood we were living in before. It is a cul-de-sac, so like our old street its very quiet, but it is not off of a street inhabited by deadbeats and criminals which is a vast improvement. We're leasing it for 3 years because we're going to have to short sell our old house; the housing market is essentially nonexistnt in Cleveland right now and we already had two houses on our street go for $13,000 and $33,000 respectively. Still, I'm perfectly happy with it for now. Depending how things go we might even rent-to-own. It is, however, HOT! That's ok with me; I like hot better than cold and I'm glad we won't have to drive in the snow anymore, but it is going to take a bit of getting used to. |

Enjoy your new home. That's pretty near as far south as Texas goes. Not all that far from the Gulf either. Too hot and humid there for me, but so is Sacramento during the worst of summer. You're pretty near the Mexican border. Any plans to spend some time there? I don't know much of anything about Reynosa. |

Living in TX you gain a whole new level of respect for the sun. You will want to be careful (especially with your kids) to begin with as you get used to the sun, and how quickly you can get a sunburn or dehydration. Your old internal barometers on how long you can be out in the sun without any ill effects is going to be off. |

Aizle: Definitely. I need to be generous with the sunblock with my Irish complexion. I don' worry too much about myself with the heat; I was at Fort Hood before and of course I had a year in the sandbox, so basically I just need to remember to drink water. I'm more worried about the wife and kids. Michael: Not planning on going into Mexico at all. We are near South Padre Island though, about an hour away. If anyone ever has plans to vacation there, let me know! Kaffis: Sadly, probably that's not going to happen. I might be able to arrange something some time when we come back on vacation though, to visit my wife's parents. I really enjoyed the last one, wish we could have done it more often. Other than that.. HOLY **** I NEED MY WIFE! I've made 2 trips to the grocery (forgot all kinds of stuff the first time), gone to the church we plan to go to, gone to Best Buy and ordered a washer and drier, gone to Lowe's and got a grill, and bought a mattress and box spring today for the twin bed I brought in my truck. I got the kitchen organized but other than that the place is a disaster, it's 8:15 at night, and I haven't even made dinner yet. I haven't been a bachelor for the last 7 years other than when I had to be away from my wife and up until now that's been in hotels or barracks where there was a chow hall. Anyone want to volunteer to be a wife for 2 months? Please? (And no, not in that way. Get your minds out of the gutter! ) |

Welcome to Texas! I did not know you lived in Elyria before. I went to college near there many years ago. Definitely use lots of sunscreen here. |

More than 30 years ago. And yeah, that is a good description of it. |

That's around the time I was born, then. My parents moved to Elyria in 1978, right before I turned 3. My mother moved us to Philly when I was 10 after they got divorced. I'm really glad to be back in Texas. I loved it when I was at Fort Hood.. Hood, sucks, but Texas is great! |

Good deal man. If it wasn't for the fact that all my exes live in Texas... (okay just the one but still) I knew a guy from McAllen, raved about the food. Might be a good time to test the local cuisine see where you want to take the little Mrs. when she arrives. |

I still theorize that I could manage a tan if i get enough sun that my freckles all band together. |
