A very good friend of mine that lives in Wichita has 4 boys under the age of 10. They were walking to school yesterday and a guy in his 40s in a silver 2 door pulled up and asked if they wanted a ride to school. My friend and his wife had trained their kids on not accepting rides from strangers, etc, and so they said no. The guy then tried to convince him, said he knew the way to the school and why didn't they just hop in. They still refused, so the guy rolled up his window and drove off. They didn't say anything until later on that night the oldest mentioned it offhand. My friend, of course, realized how serious it was and called the police and the school.

Today the school called wanting the police report, so they could coordinate. It turns out that there was a report of a man watching the school, and another report of a man trying to get another kid to get in his car.

Edit: Note, I said 4 boys, but the youngest wasn't with them as he goes to preschool.

Yikes. Good training for the kids, guess I need to start working on that. Thanks for the reinforcement.

If they are under 10 I'd restrict them to .22's.

I am very glad they are all right. I hope the cops track that guy down.

I remember when I was younger we were taught to have a secret word that we weren't supposed to share with anyone, and my parents would tell a trusted friend what it was if they ever needed to pick us up for anything. That way if we were offered a ride, if they didn't know the secret word, they were not to be trusted. I believe I was six when my parents discussed this with us.

It seemed like a decent system.

I got to pick the secret word, which was "Voltron." So, now you guys can offer me rides in your vans. Preferably the women folk. ;)

Not so eerie. It was one of the good ideas that was being promoted a lot about 20 years ago. Why it isn't these days I don't know. It is still a good idea, a very good idea. We did it with our daughter.

My parents and I watched an HBO special called "How to raise a street smart child" in 1987, it had Daniel J Travanti and John Walsh on the show. This was one of the very basic things they stressed as important to child safety.
