Monday is Memorial Day. Though that poem traditionally observes Veteran's Day.
Aren't they basically the same? Holidays are great but I'm sure they can find other themes, we already have at least 3 (Memorial day, Veteran's day, Independence day) that are based on hostility, which is cool and all but just saying.
edit:
The countless engineers, doctors and nurses, office administrators, laborers, scientists, and yes even lawyers are the ones who built this country and made it so great. They've done so much more than soldiers who went to 3rd world countries to cause destruction. Even the War of Independence didn't make this country great. We would have been fine under British rule. The Civil War was bullshit, they should have been ashamed of fighting eachother. Even in World War 2 we wrecked the European economy, and the Japanese economy, and set back the development of the world by at least a decade. The Soviet Union was a terrible place too but they wouldn't have made all their space, flight, mechanical, and industrial innovations if we successfully invaded and occupied them.
I agree that war is awesome to talk about, and it's quite glamorous and really cool, but they should be recognized less than other Americans.
