In Flanders Field

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae
3 May 1915

I'm not sure of the significance of posting that today, however.

Monday is Memorial Day. Though that poem traditionally observes Veteran's Day.

Odd, I find it much more appropriate for Memorial Day.

I found it while reading around the net on Memorial Day, trying to participate by reading about the wars past and thinking of the men and women who've given their all in war. It touched me, and as part of the Weekend I thought I'd share it with the people I care about. You folks qualify.

In Canada (and most Commonwealth countries around the world), we have "Remembrance Day," on November 11th (the date of the Armistice that ended WWI in 1918) every year to remember the members of the armed forces who have died on duty since World War I -- which is more like your Memorial Day, except for the date. John McCrae was a Canadian soldier in WWI-- I was actually surprised to learn that this particular poem is known by Americans.

Aren't they basically the same? Holidays are great but I'm sure they can find other themes, we already have at least 3 (Memorial day, Veteran's day, Independence day) that are based on hostility, which is cool and all but just saying.

edit:

The countless engineers, doctors and nurses, office administrators, laborers, scientists, and yes even lawyers are the ones who built this country and made it so great. They've done so much more than soldiers who went to 3rd world countries to cause destruction. Even the War of Independence didn't make this country great. We would have been fine under British rule. The Civil War was bullshit, they should have been ashamed of fighting eachother. Even in World War 2 we wrecked the European economy, and the Japanese economy, and set back the development of the world by at least a decade. The Soviet Union was a terrible place too but they wouldn't have made all their space, flight, mechanical, and industrial innovations if we successfully invaded and occupied them.

I agree that war is awesome to talk about, and it's quite glamorous and really cool, but they should be recognized less than other Americans.

The aforementioned Lt. Colonel John McCrae was a surgeon.
WWI and WWII weren't really fought much in third world countries.

Talya, I came across it on the internet. It wasn't a poem I already knew. I did however find it powerful and appropriate for Memorial Day. Lt. Col. John McCrae was also a poet by the way. There is a book published of his poems. The French Roundel is not such an easy or well known form as to casually be used that well by someone without some knowledge and effort.

Americans can appreciate things Canadian, you keep sending us your entertainers, lumber, and maple syrup, don't you?

Can does not mean will and does not extend to everything.

JB has enough fans without me being one of them.
