I took the kids camping over Memorial Day, in the mountains outside of Tehachapi, CA. It was a bit windy and cool the first night, but nothing major. It began to rain during the second night, and toward morning, I began to think, "Gee, that sounds more like hail than rain." Figured we'd have a few hailstones laying around, maybe a few flakes. Instead, we awoke to this: Spoiler: My kids were pretty stoked. I was cool with it, except that we really weren't prepared for a second night in actual snow/freezing rain. I packed up the car (while it was still snowing), and headed home, but at least I can say I've been camping in the snow. On Memorial Day weekend, no less! |

Insane! We were doing Wood Badge one year for scouts and we had tornadoes one night and woke up to snow the next. Sometimes the weather acts all crazy when you are camping. Wish ya'll were prepared for the snow...that could have been quite fun to stay another night. |

Yeah, the problem was two-fold: One is that the tent is about 25 years old, and not really all that waterproof anymore (if it ever was). Plus, we didn't have a lot of warm clothing, and the kids' sleeping bags are not meant for anything much below 50 degrees or so. The second problem is altitude - oh, sure, it may have all melted by mid-afternoon, but then if the temperature got back down below freezing in the evening, it would have been really hard to make it back up the mountain. I anticipated an evening of dealing with frozen mud. (The campground is at about 5500' or so.) |

One of my most favorite field trips was to the Mohave Desert, many years ago. Our first night was spent in Tehachapi where we got snowed on too! Luckily, those of us without tents had the bus to sleep in. |
