Free. Free is always good, right?

*Almost* complete set (missing 1, 23, 29, and 30, sadly) of the 1956 Encyclopedia Americana:

...and with that, I'm leaning toward fail. ;)

Sadly, I may have to agree with fail. Unless, of course, you are interested in a look back into the past and how things were documented then.

Otherwise, yeah, fail.

Is this going to be a new punishment for the kids? Book reports on the discovery of the Minamata disease?

Hahaha!!
Actually, I had the crazy idea of putting them on top of the cabinets in the kitchen, since there's a bunch of stark, bare, empty space up there...sort of like a decoration.
Can I blame it on Farsky? I saw his B&N leather-bound collection on his bookshelf interspersed with pretty things and figured I'd do the same thing with the top of the empty cabinets...just without having to spend $$ to do it?

I dunno. Could still be a fail, haha! At least it didn't cost me anything though!
Or rather, more importantly, NF IT DIDN'T COST YOU ANYTHING, lol! :D

Might not be bad thing. 56' was a big year for Elvis. Is volume E in there?

I'll vote 'score'.

They're quite attractive as decorations, if nothing else, so yeah, I vote 'score.' :)

Also, bonus points if one of your kids comes in and says "Wow, those are some old Wikipedias!"

Good visual example. "Kids, this was the internet back in our day. Minus the porn."

Cut out a hole in the pages...and use them to hide valuables?

I go for score!

I'll say a tentative score, unless you can come up with the missing 4 books.

I emailed the lady who gave them to me...she is pretty sure the other 4 got thrown away, unfortunately.

They do look pretty good on top of my cabinets though. :)

I say SCORE! because old books are cool, especially when free! :)

(Why would anyone throw away a book??? Does not compute!)

They suit your need and the price was right. What's not to score?

I'm willing to wager that you can track down the four missing volumes over time.

Old encyclopedias are fun because of the history. Looking at what they thought was important back then. Also look at the new technology of today and see what they have to say about the precursor technologies.

I'd say display them if you have some naked shelves, but if you needed to move, I'd suggest pitching them before you put the effort into moving them.

Cause if *I* had to fetch and carry those, it'd be FAIL.
