Admins - Do you guys have a script to flip this setting between yes/no on everyone's profile? Or do we just have to switch it manually every 6 months?

Nothing automated at this time. It would be trivial to toggle; the trick is knowing who not to toggle.

I always assumed that setting was there so that we could indicate whether or not we observed DST, and the board should be switching time for us based on that.

Thus, I'd always assumed that it was broken, or else it was coded with the assumption that the computer hosting the board would be flipping for DST and Moo (or rather, his hosting solution) was in a strange non-DST area...

Not broken, just implemented stupidly. phpBB has never handled DST properly.

I'm pretty sure the only continental US people you'll have to worry about are posters from AZ, which is the only full state to not participate in DST. Not 100% sure, but I don't recall off the top of my head any rural Indiana posters.

Don't know the rules for Sui's British Summer Time or if the Aussies do anything similar tho.

Yeah, here in AZ we don't use that ridiculously stupid DST crap. Some rural Indiana counties didn't use it, but they caved in finally.

Don't expect us in AZ to cave in though, because who the hell would want to save daylight when it's 118 degrees outside?

It made more sense when it was proposed if you were conserving candles/oil. Now that we burn as much energy maintaining a workplace completely without regard to the amount of light outside.. (and indeed more while working during daylight hours if AC is involved) it makes less sense.

There's a pretty good writeup about it in Wiki.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight_saving_time

Quote:
The practice has been both praised and criticized. Adding daylight to afternoons benefits retailing, sports, and other activities that exploit sunlight after working hours, but causes problems for farming, evening entertainment and other occupations tied to the sun. Its effect on health and crime is less clear. Although an early goal of DST was to reduce evening usage of incandescent lighting, formerly a primary use of electricity, modern heating and cooling usage patterns differ greatly, and research about how DST currently affects energy use is limited or contradictory.

DST clock shifts present other challenges. They complicate timekeeping, and can disrupt meetings, travel, billing, recordkeeping, medical devices, heavy equipment, and sleep patterns. Software can often adjust computer clocks automatically, but this can be limited and error-prone, particularly when DST protocols are changed.

Another interesting point, mentioned later, is that DST is not a new invention. It's just more rigidly defined now. Ancient cultures based their times of day on the position of the sun, so their time-judgements automatically adjusted themselves for differences in daylight hours.

I do have to say, given a choice, I'd stay on DST all year round, rather than do without it or turning the clocks back in the fall. Standard time is never a good idea. I like the extra sunlight hours later in the day, rather than early in the morning.
