I really don't like how Vets are singled out while people like construction workers, nurses, etc. don't get a day, and they are much more important to America. I will just say that Veteran's day is stupid because of this. I'm glad that 11/11/11 is the same day because it distracted people from the stupid holiday that occurs every year. |

*edited the quote, and reply, should have known better* I think you need to check things out before you post, Lex...as a Nurse I get a whole week dedicated to Nursing. During nurses week we are recognized very nicely. Veterans on the Glade...thank you |

The difference is that nobody knows about Nurses week except for nurses... the point is that there are countless professions which have done more to help Americans than our armed forces, and are not as well recognized. Veteran's day is a remnant of nationalism that I wish would go away. I would not at all be surprised if 50 years from now it is controversial to celebrate people who invaded foreign countries and killed hundreds of thousands. For example I don't think people glamorize "The Rape of the Sabine Women" anymore. |

While I know your just trolling Lex, I'll bite on this one. All of those others you speak of would not be able to do what they do without the veterans that have fought and died so they can the opportunity to live their lives. There would be no USA without them. You may not agree with some of the wars, but that is a matter to take up with the leadership of the country not the people that follow their orders and serve. |

Course, ignoring doesn't work when the next person quotes the stupid. |

It doesn't bother us. Lex decided to **** up the thread last year; It's nothing new. Thanks for the appreciation, everyone. I honestly like not to make a big deal about Veteran's Day for myself, but I'm glad it's there for vets who actually got shot up. |

Well I definitely know who I'd want representing my country abroad and defending its principles as well as at my barbeque or having a beer whilst fishing. Salute to all the veterans who've served in any capacity, regardless of their motive or reason for doing so. |

Sorry this is so delayed, I just don't get around here as often as I like any more. Curse websense at work! /shakefist Anyway, on Veteran's Day, my daughter and I had a little while together while my wife was out. I was flipping through the channels and ended up on G4 where they were showing an episode of Bomb Patrol Afganistan. The part we were watching was a bit boring and after a long wait they broke out MREs for lunch and one serviceman said something like "nice, chocolate chip cookie". To this my daughter said "I know what I'd take", which rubbed me the wrong way. Trying not to get emotional, I tried to explain, that sometimes just a little something special in your meal, like a chocolate chip cookie can make all the difference to a person's moral. Having a little piece of something to remember home, and your family, even a small connection can make a big difference. She did say she was sorry and didn't mean it like that. I explained that I understood, but wanted her to know that it isn't easy for the service members or their families (she was not exposed to my deployments as I got out before she was born). I also explained that if she did ask for their cookie, that they would give it to her, because that's the kind of people we have protecting our country. Anyway, sorry for the segway and the lame little story. It was a bonding experience for us and I do think she has a better appreciation of our military. Thanks again for the words and rest assured I am equally thankful for those that have served, are serving and those who will chose to serve in the future. |
