Now it's gone viral with over 14 million views. Pretty funny.

Here's his response to the video going viral.

Damn good parenting.
(Apart for the going viral, which he couldn't predict, wasn't his intent, and could end up sending the wrong message. Fortunately, he appears to be on top of that.)

I agree and disagree with this. Staying true to his word and carrying through with the punishment is good, but the one-upping (she posts a note on fb so he posts a video of him shooting her laptop...) and unnecessary destruction of property are hugely bad examples to give your children.

The girl deserved to be punished, but I think he went overboard on it.

I am ambivalent about the destruction of the laptop. I have threatened to throw out children's toys that I find lying around the house if they don't put them away. I stopped making that threat because I hate waste. Those things cost somebody money. Usually me. I couldn't bring myself to destroy a working, reasonably modern laptop. However, if he can, all the more power to him.

I can't figure out why he wasted that many .45 rounds, when a single 12 gauge shell would have done.

Yeah I'd have sent it off to Goodwill or just locked it up. If it wasn't for his response, I'd wonder if he wasnt shooting it for selfish reasons.

He was shooting for the visual impact it had on his daughter. There was no pleading or begging, or getting it back. It was gone forever, and dad was **** serious.

I've done something similar, smashing a hair-dryer with a hammer.

I never had to deal with the pre-smash problem again, and a valuable lesson was learned that day.

Well done. I heartily approve of how this father handled this.

Demonstrating that anger should be resolved with destruction? Donate it to goodwill.

Wow- If he has the balls to destroy a laptop, good for him.

Actually, this is what impressed me. He didn't display any real anger at all. Frustration and resolve, but none of this was done in a rage. It was calculated and done to make a point. One of the most difficult things as a parent is waiting until anger has subsided before administering discipline, to ensure one is being fair and getting the point across without going overboard. I think he handled it well.

Other points I liked:
-sticking up for "the cleaning lady"
-sticking up for his ex-wife.

If what i've read has happened since then, his daughter may have gotten the point. Of course, it's hard to say with teenagers.

He was quite obviously livid, and did a good job at keeping his anger in check. There was good parenting in that video, but shooting the laptop wasn't it. By his own admission, the video was not for his daughter, but for her friends and their parents. The video was about pride and vanity, and saving face after his daughter ran her mouth. To his credit, he appears to be cognizant of that, which I suspect is why he's refused television interviews.

It's his laptop. He can choose to do with it as he pleases. His daughter got the message loud and clear from his action, moreso I'd wager than if he told her he donated it.

I wouldn't donate a used computer anywhere, anyhow. That strikes me as asking for trouble.

No one is debating that he has the RIGHT to destroy it. It just seems foolish other than to demonstrate that he'll resort to violence to make his point.

Destroying an object is not really "violence". Suppose he'd disassembled it with a screwdriver? Would the result be any different?

I just wish he would have flipped it over so we could see the back after he shot it.

he works in IT. He's capable of purging it. (or simply removing the HD)

This, although I suspect it may have something to do with what firearms he has immediately available.

I approve of what he did and how he did it, although there is definately a fair bit of ego going on with his reply and a need to "save face".

Removing the HD would sort of render donating it pointless. Yes, you could add a new one but that might cost more than the laptop is worth.

As for purging.. lots of work, to just donate it for no better reason than to avoid shooting it to make the point.

Maybe he doesn't own a 12-guage.

I can purge a laptop of data with about 30 seconds of effort and 90 minutes of unattended time.

And I can pay someone to recover data from a HDD you zero-wrote twice before sending along on its merry little way. Forensic data recovery is a profitable business for a reason.

a. Someone buying a computer from a donation service is HIGHLY unlikely to either do that or even know how to do that.
b. If you're really worried about it, remove the hard drive before donating the computer.
