And my birthday present is....*drumroll*

Getting 4.5 hours of sleep because I had to prepare for giving a speech in my Communications class one hour from now. I'm skipping my (optional) English Comp lab today for the first time to squeeze in some more last-minute rehearsal.

Lessons learned:
  • no matter how interesting, never choose a topic even tangentially related to something as complicated as the Yugoslav Wars for a 5-7 minute speech.
  • Serbo-Croatian names are really hard to memorize.
  • No matter how much you hate public speaking and "just want to get it over with", don't sign up to present on the first day of normal class after spring break. Especially not when the previous class session on Monday was the course's midterm exam.
  • As predicted, getting Skyrim for spring break was a Bad Idea(TM).

Well, I survived my speech. It didn't go as well as rehearsal, but I think I did reasonably well. I had a more polished presentation than the others who presented today, I think. Unfortunately I was more nervous than I thought I would be (though less nervous than my previous presentations). As I feared, I wound up going over time. I had it down to 6:30 in rehearsal, but I somehow managed to go a whopping 7:20, which was the limit of our grace time. I wasn't expecting to hit 6:30 under pressure, but I really didn't think I would go a full 50 seconds over that. I had to cut short with two sentences left from my conclusion, and that was after I had already silently dropped several minor points of the speech. That will probably hurt me some, but our outline, source materials, etc. are all part of the grade as well, so that's likely a minor point. In any case, at least misery loves company. So far, everyone else has gone over as well.

Now you know how I feel lecturing. Two hours isn't even close to enough time. And then, if you decide to plan for half an hour of people asking you questions, that will be the evening when everybody decides to be quiet as a mouse.

Raises hand- Three days intensive summer workshop on Instructional technology integration and training with having to fit in every aspect of the presentation broken between two of us. Presented this to about 45 people. You could feel the sweat from my forehead at the back of the room.

This is why I like kids, adults make me sweat :P

Stathol you know you did well, so don't "sweat" it.
