The Glade 4.0

Just realized it's been almost 6 months since we last owned a microwave....don't miss it really. We never have leftovers to reheat because it all gets eaten the night we cook it. I do miss those stupid little microwave baked potatoes though, and popcorn, but not enough to warrant buying a microwave.

I really enjoy not having one....for the first time in my whole life. I feel like such a rebel, hahaha!

It's easy enough to pop popcorn in a pan if you really miss it.

I don't have one. Haven't since I moved into my house 2-3 years ago. I pop my popcorn on the stovetop.

I cook up all the meat for our meals through the week on Monday evening then nuke the burgers or steaks Tuesday through Friday along with whatever individual frozen veggies packages we choose. I also chop and wash the lettuce on Monday's too.

We'd have to redo the whole schedule if we didn't have a microwave.

We have one, and frankly with 3 kids (even with just 2 kids at home and one off at college) its indispensable. When I was down here before my wife got here, it was a royal pain in the *** not having it as well simply because I was getting home from work damn late and while I grilled almost every main course, making sides was a pain without it. Of course, the oven conked out when I moved in and it was some bizarre nonstandard size so it took the landlord quite a while to find a replacement, and that dodn't help either, but it is a huge help.

If we didn't have one we could make it without one I suppose, but the time-savings is more than worth the relative inexpense of even a fairly powerful microwave (I bought a new one right before the family got here since our old one was 13 years old and really a bit small for a family of 5) and the cost of electricity.

I would say that if you're cooking everything in it though, you're not eating well because you're probably eating a lot of breaded/fried instant meals and relatively few vegetables.

We have a 21-year-old guy where I work that can't cook. If he doesn't eat out or get invited to someone's house for dinner, he basically eats hot pockets and raman noodles. Evidently, he's not even that good at microwaving!

I get most of my food from the Indian take out place next door, so I don't prepare anything ever. Preparing food is unpaid labor.

Yup, use it to warm up leftovers, canned goods and frozen vegetables.



If that's your view, carrying your own personal items and driving yourself from place to place are also unpaid labor. Cooking your own food is labor you don't have to pay someone else to do.

I have one and use it almost every day to warm leftovers. It is convenient and fast, but I could get by without it if it broke down.

This is all true, if I could afford it then someone would drive me everywhere and carry my things. In India managers for my company get a personal driver.

Microwaves and toaster ovens are awesome. Could live without one but wouldn't want to. In my current place, we actually ended up having 2 microwaves. One that was built in above the oven but isn't very good, and the super she-bang-a-bang we bought while we were renting that we use constantly.

It gets used many times a day right now for sterilizing baby bottles and various gear.

Great for warming up leftovers. Also steaming rice and frozen vegetables.

Otherwise, it just use it to reheat my coffee.

Mostly, this.

Also use it for several side-dishes. For instance, rice is always boiled in the microwave. It's faster and easier than stovetop.

It's all about the beverages. I use it to reheat leftovers, but most things I'm also OK with just eating cold.

But what's really useful for is heating up beverages/soups that would be a lot more trouble (and an extra dirty pot) to reheat on the stove.

I can heat up a cup of soup really easily and quickly in the microwave, but I really don't have any pots small enough to do a cup of soup on the stove- so I end up re-heating a lot more soup than I want to eat, and then cooling it down and storing it again. Not good for the soup, and not very energy efficient.

Same for hot drinks- heating up a cup of milk for hot chocolate is quick and easy- a cup of milk on the stove takes more attention, heat control, and usually, a larger volume.

My mother has a series of microwave cookbooks from back when the microwave was a new invention and people were under the mistaken notion that they would be used for actual cooking rather than simply reheating stuff.

There are some things they're great for quickly and easily cooking- I find them especially useful for hard shelled squash and pumpkins- poke a couple of holes in them, and throw them in the microwave.

They're also great for a quick and easy sweet-potato dinner.

I'd ask why you're poking holes in squash and pumpkins, then heating them in a microwave, but I've decided I don't want to know.

Quick and easy? It's either that, or halve them and lay them cut side down on a baking tray.

That option uses up my oven while they're cooking, and requires a lot more energy than 15 minutes in the microwave.

We don't have one, ever since moving into this house a little more than a year ago. I do miss it sometimes, but, honestly, you adjust. The only time I do miss it is when I want to cook something that's frozen and needs to be defrosted.

And, yeah, the occasional cup of coffee, but I generally just drink it at room temperature.

Ever have a sudden desire for cake? And really want instant gratification? This is what the microwave was born for!

Chocolate mug cake
4 TBSP flour
4 TBSP sugar
2 TBSP cocoa
1 egg
3 TBSP oil
3 TBSP milk
vanilla
chocolate chips

Stir dry ingredients in a large mug with a fork
Add wet ingredients and stir until mostly smooth
Stir in chocolate chips
Microwave 3 minutes

Please note that this is not terrific cake... what it is is FAST cake. And sometimes that's just what you need. A little ice cream and caramel sauce and all the cake's shortcomings are obscured.

I don't "need" the microwave. I could survive quite nicely if a little more slowly without it. I like having it.
