So this is the second time I've used one while I was sick. They're fairly uncomfortable while you use them but holy crap does it pay off in dividends later on. I had a really bad post nasal drip. I used it twice within about 3 hours of going to bed and my throat stopped hurting. I was able to sleep 10 hours and woke up feeling like most of the cold has gone away. I used it once this morning and I'm breathing so clear.

Anybody ever used one of these before? What's been your experience?

Yes, occasionally. Yes it does pay off, wish I had it with me now, DC air is not good to me.

It seems weird when you are doing it, but the benefit of having clean sinuses is worth it.

I actually had to google that...never heard of it before. Huh. Looks and sounds gross, but I bet it works a lot better than just a steamy shower.

I use one every time allergy season rolls around. I find it to help immensely. I will occasionally use one when infected with a rhinovirus.

It's basically that but lasts at LOT longer.

I use the Ayr squeeze bottle thing, never tried a neti pot. It works really well though, I'd had some serious sinus infections over the last few years but since I started using it I've barely had allergy issues.

I think I'll just suffer, rather than take part in that.

It's not bad at all. You are using a saline solution, so it does not trigger any discomfort or other unfortunate effects. Plus, if you do it in the shower, clean up is a snap.

I do it in the kitchen sink. I just use regular warm water - no salt. I've never been able to get the salt mixture right because it always burned a bit.

That's probably the iodine, actually. Use non-iodized salt and baking soda.

You're saying use a combination of the two or one or the other? What kind of mixture do you use?

Heh, the Ayr thing I use has all that premixed and individually packaged. There are a variety of kits at CVS as well. When I try using straight water it burns like snorting fire.

1/4 tsp salt + 1/4 tsp baking soda in 8 oz. of water gives an isotonic mixture.

I love my neti pot. I can actually get away with a seriously hypertonic solution of 1 tsp salt in 8 oz of water, which clears swollen nasal passages right up but burns a little. Looks like a lighter concentration is better for daily use, buffered with a bit of baking soda. I'll try that tonight (I'm just getting over a head cold). Once you're used to it you can wash the back of your throat with it and spit, which helps post-nasal-drip sore throat enormously.

So I started coming down with a cold Friday night. I started using the Neti Pot every 2-3 hours and loading up on the Vitamin C. What is usually my annaul post nasal drip/sore throat/sinus misery never progressed further than mild discomfort in one part of my throat. Man I love these things.

And congrats to Taamar on the post count of the beast.

As is my usual holiday M.O., I came down with a nasty bug on Friday that is still kicking my *** (I think I'm genetically bred to be the perfect employee...my body only ever allows me to be sick once I've started a holiday, and I'm generally in literal working order by the time the next workday rolls around). This sounds like a godsend...but I don't know that willingly cycling salt water through my nose is something I could do.

It really isn't so bad. Once you get the water through and blow the water out of your nose, you immediately feel better just in how you breathe. Somebody's 1/8 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon baking soda seems to be a winning combination. Any inhibitions you have for it go away after the first successful use. Getting the head-angle right can be difficult at first.

Be careful what you suggest -- Screeling's posting in this thread already!

Screeling - if you have trouble getting the mixture just right, try the pre-measured packets.

I use these:

and have never had any discomfort issues. Should be able to pick 'em up at any drugstore.

What kind of ingredients do these things have? The picture quality doesn't seem so good on my screen.

I could do this to someone else, but don't think I could do this to myself. Kinda like giving shots. I have allergy troubles once in a while, but it seems to resolve on it's own. I'm happier without a Neti pot, I think. :)
