(08-06) 19:20 PDT RICHMOND -- A shelter-in-place order was put in place for Richmond, North Richmond and San Pablo after a fire broke out at a Chevron refinery Monday night, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department.

Community health warning sirens rang through the area shortly after the fire broke out at about 6:30 p.m.., spewing thick black smoke into the sky. The sirens alerted residents to stay indoors and turn off air conditioner and vents to prevent breathing in tainted air.

BART closed the Richmond station, and shut down service between Richmond and El Cerrito at about 7 p.m.

Both of us are over 50 miles away in different directions, but i'll be watching the news on this one. Not sure which way the wind is blowing if it goes catastrophic.

I saw the report a little earlier this evening. Scary stuff. Definitely glad I don't live in Richmond, Benesia, or Martinez. This kind of thing happens every couple of years in one of those cities. :(

They're going to get Federal assistance to recover from this disaster, obviously. That's how things work now, right? You **** up, and get money so you don't fail?
