I've got a shelf full of gadgets that are rarely used and I really need to cut down the waste. I thought about just doing a trade-in or whatnot, but I figured I'd offer it here first. Kindle Fire, pristine condition, charger and blue Kindle Case included.

I might sell the Google Nexus 7 as well (16 GB version, throwing in the case as well). PM me an offer if you're interested. :)

Taamar says she would be interested in the Kindle Fire.

I'm guessing he has to make room in the stable for a couple of the new Windows 8 based slates when they come out.....

Or not :P

Currently on the Shelf of Unused Toys:

Kindle Fire
Kindle 4g
Kindle Touch
Kindle Keyboard
Nook Touch
Nexus 7
Motorola Xoom
iPhone 3GS

I'm giving away the Kindle Touch and the Nook Touch to family, the iPhone 3GS is being co-opted into Far Sky Films' use (to record auditions), and I do occasionally break out the Kingle 4g (which I love, but seems superfluous when I virtually always have my iPad with me). And that's on top of the two iPads (one new, one an iPad 2) and my iPhone 4S.

Additionally, I've got a four-year-old MacBook Pro and a four-year-old vanilla MacBook that are now out of commission with the purchase of the last Air and the retina MacBook Pro, and an old PowerPC Mac mini, in addition to Phe's old PC, neither of which see use since I have a new iMac and we bought Phe a new Windows box (mainly for SWTOR, which we don't even play nowadayS). :D

All of this is to say that I've got waaaaaaay too much clutter for gadgets I never use anymore. I really need to score some kind of cushy reviewing gig wherein I receive new gadgets for free. :)

This is probably a silly question, but what possible reason do you have for purchasing so many tablet readers?

Why would you need a reason?

Just a curiosity on my part.

Multiple, really. The first is just personal enjoyment: I love playing with new gadgets, learning their ins and outs. Correspondingly, I'm always searching for perfection (hence the multiple e-readers). Just because something is serving a purpose, is it truly serving its purpose in the absolute best possible way? This leads into a professional curiosity; as someone who's designed mobile apps and has an intense interest in design, what has the best UX (or UI, as the case may be)? Are there good ideas that can be improved upon (by me, or others)? Weight, balance, design, build quality...all of those things are important. Is there something better out there than what I'm currently using?

Bottom line, I guess: it's part OCD, part curiosity, and part just simple collection.

Sorry if I missed this but of all the devices is there one or two that you find yourself using regularly?

Ipad and Iphone 4s?

Yeah, the iPad and the iPhone 4S. I occasionally break out the Kindle 4g, but as it's so highly-specialized, and I virtually always have a multifunction device with me already (iPad), it travels with me far less in the first place.

Thanks. My wife just got the Kindle Fire for her birthday from her sisters. I was curious to see if it could be a laptop replacement for me and I think the IPad would be much better for that.

Granted the Ipad costs a lot more but the laptop feels so clunky and clutters things up so much. I'd really like to replace it.

Any android tablet is IMO better than an iPad as a "laptop replacement" if only because it allows you access to the file system.

Eh...I disagree. The tradeoffs are too great (particularly app-wise). If you really need a file system, just pair an iPad with Dropbox or somethin'.

I can easily travel with my iPad in place of my laptop, but I couldn't just take my Nexus 7.

What is the android equivalent to the ipad? Same size and functionality.

Ipad is also worth it to me because we do "Facetime" with family. Currently using the iphone for it but ipad would be handy.

Equivalent android devices would be the Motorola Xoom 2 or Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. I disagree with Farskee about the trade-offs being too great, the Android market is huge and has a larger market share than iOS anyway. I also think he's a bit disingenuous when he says he could travel with his iPad and not the N7. I can't think of what one could do that the other couldn't, other than be tied into proprietary stuff like iCloud.

Facetime is also limited to iOS users, where something like Skype is obviously not.

Or if you want something that's going to make them all look like ****, wait for the Windows 8 tablets to hit in October.

Don't forget about the ASUS Transformer platform (whatever the current version is). It's the closest thing to a laptop replacement out there right now, including a dockable keyboard/battery, external USB, USB or BlueTooth Mouse and/or Keyboard, Mass Storage, and two external storage slots. Plus the Tegra 3, which makes it an excellent gaming platform.
Edit:

Transformer Pad Infinity (TF700T)

Dammit. Whenever I make a purchase, 2 months later they announce what I really wanted is coming in another 3 months. ;)

Anyways, my TF300 is a dream for laptop replacement. There are only two things I've thrown at it that I would have done on my laptop that it refused to do: deal with Marvel's bloated flash-based viewer for their subscription service (the Marvel app doesn't view the subscription library, only the buy-by-issue titles), which it can do but it's painful and a terrible experience; and 3+ way video chat on Skype -- it'll handle voice conferencing on Skype, and 2-way video, but won't do video conference. Again, though, that's the app's fault rather than the device, really, and the iOS apps for both cases are the same feature-set.

I'll probably wait for that then and decide.

Yeah, the "Surface" is what I'm holding out for.

Surface: It's also a touch screen I assume. The keyboard (while cool) is not necessary? Nice though. I like it a lot. Depends on weight, speed, resolution and boot time how much I like it. Oh and price.

Yes it's a touchscreen, and there are going to be two versions of the cover/keyboard. One that's touch, and one that's got physical keys. I think they said it was just a hair heavier than the iPad, but everyone that saw it on announce day said the build quality was great. Resolution wise, MS has only said "HD" for RT and "Full HD" for Pro, which I assume is 720p/1080p. I think MS has said Win8 boot times on tablets are in the single digit seconds.

The entry version of surface just got rumored to launch at $199, but that's Windows RT which is made for ARM processors and has some limitations. You can read up on the differences here.

I dunno, the interface still looks bloody awful, and that article says RT can't use any other browser but IE.

From what I've read that's not exactly true. The only stipulation is that programs need to be installed through the MS Store and no other company has submitted a metro browser yet. I know Chrome is working on one. Of course I could be completely wrong, the wording is really ambiguous depending on where I look.
