I know we have quite a few gun nuts here, so I was going to see if anyone has any direct experience with this particular 1911 variant. I'm considering purchasing one as my primary .45 to shoot/use. http://www.coltsmfg.com/Catalog/ColtPis ... ilGun.aspx I'd be getting the one on the right, in all black Cerakote. Also, anyone have experience with a Cerakoted weapon? How does it hold up? |

I have a Kimber Mk2 Custom. IMO, a 1911 isn't a gun for someone who isn't willing to learn some basic to intermediate gun smithing. The 1911 design simply doesn't lend itself mass production and there is a chance you may get one that needs some work to run reliably. Being able to check tolerances; since it's such a tight fitting gun, it's really vulnerable to tolerance stacking and certain elements might ultimately beyond what is dimensionally acceptable to cycle properly with high reliability. I've seen people with random problems ranging from guide rod, recoil spring, slide rails, extractor out of position etc. I got lucky and once I found the right load for it (seems to like Speer Gold Dots, 200gr, doesn't cycle well on the light loads) and the right mags (Wilson Combat 47), it ran without a hiccup for about 600 rounds when I had a failure to eject (stovepipe) and ran another 500+ with another failure to eject. This applies to any 1911. The problem is checking all that stuff requires a lot of work with precise instruments. Kimber seems to have a pretty good QA and customer service. Honestly, if I wanted to buy a 1911 that I knew would run, I'd buy one from a custom outfit like Wilson Combat. Since I'm not willing to spend $3k+ on a 1911, I will not be buying another 1911. And even when you have a good gun, it takes time to find the right load and magazines, though this has been pretty well sorted out. I'd much rather take my Glock, M&P9, P226, M9 or USP out. All of those guns eat dirty bulk ammo, premium self defense loads, match grade and everything else you could put through it. |

Also, I don't have anything Cerakoted but I do have some Duracoated stuff that I did myself (M&P and some knives). It wears well, but from what I hear, Cerakote wears even better since it's high temp bonded ceramic versus the Duracoat which I did at room temp. |

In that Same vein, my wife is looking for a Taser to carry on nights she works late (in not-the-best part of town) She has her CCL but doesn't want a handgun in the house with a 6 year old. any suggestions? |

My suggestion is don't get a TASER. They really should not be sold for self defense at all. They're too unreliable. If she's worried about the child, there's 2 basic precautions: You show the kid the gun and make it absolutely clear that she is NEVER to touch it. Get a lockbox. |

You don't want a Colt; they've made one quality handgun in the last 50 years. Kimber is highly regarded, but I'm not a fan. Paraordinance is probably where I'd start. That said, I've probably 20,000 rounds through my M1911A in my lifetime, and it's hundredth birthday is coming up next year. I've never stove-piped an ejection. |

No reason not to get one, I just think people should be clear this gun is not a Sig or a Glock; it may require some dedication outside of just trigger time on the part of the operator and/or Kimber and/or a local knowledgeable 1911 smith. |

Not that I'm a fan, but the blanket (-1) dis of the Colt line is the first I've heard of it. Why are Colts so bad compared to other makes? Is the one quality gun still the M1911 models? Khross, you do so many blanket statements without giving a reason why. It gets annoying. |

Necropost. I went ahead and purchased a Colt Rail Gun, and I couldn't be happier. The only modifications are Hogue Magwell grips and some Wilson Combat 8 round mags with bumpers. I've only put about 350 rounds through it at this point, but it is truly a pleasure to shoot. The attached pic is from my trip to the range today. 8 rounds at 21 feet. This gun and I are going to get along.

You found ammo? It's extremely rare around here. I bought a 9mm a couple of months ago and all I've found since then is 2 boxes of target fmj, no hollow points at all. All I've seen was a coupe of boxes of 12 ga. |
