Post subject: | Lies |
Are you a liar? I have been. I have mostly lied about my weight, using tricks and playing like all is well to keep people thinking that I am really gaining weight, not overexercising and using harmful things to lose weight.. or at least not gain any. It sucks to lie. I'm now in a committed relationship and to lie about this would/could really mess things up. And I don't ever want to mess this up. But I still want to lie sometimes. "Yeah, sweetie, I gained two pounds and didn't exercise it off! I'm so happy!". Okay, the "I'm so happy" part is still a lie, so I gotta work on that. Do you guys lie? And about what? PS Oh yeah, I've lied about liking Star Wars! Okay, only the prequels. They suck. And that's no lie =P |

Everyone lies sometimes. Anyone who says they don't is a liar. |

Yeah I lie, I've lied about and in relationships but never maliciously so. Its so easy to rationalize, I'll hide my feelings and pain because you've got enough on your plate. Works out great until the pot boils over. |

Would he tell me that this is the door that leads to certain destruction? |

Corolinth wrote: Would he tell me that this is the door that leads to certain destruction? In the grand scheme of things, we are all destined for certain destruction. So yes, as a metaphor for a life choice, that "door" does indeed lead to "certain" destruction. The other door leads to whores. |

Corolinth wrote: Would he tell me that this is the door that leads to certain destruction? So tell me over and over and over again, my friend, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction. Hmm. I don't recall Amdee ever declaring she liked the prequels. |

Don’t you understand what I’m tryin’ to say. Can’t you feel the fears I’m feelin’ today? Is it a lie of omission, Kaffis? |

The importance of lies depend on two factors How much value the lie has itself. How much you value the person you are telling them. |

I know that at least one person on this board has been irreparably scarred by this, but I lie to my children. I tell them Santa Claus is real. |

Speaking of lies...what would happen if Pinocchio said "My nose will grow"? If he was lying, it wouldn't grow, so then it would grow since it didn't grow...but then he would be telling the truth and it wouldn't grow, which would go back to him lying...I'm fairly certain the world would cease to exist. |

Age mostly. I got sick of the look people get when I tell them I'm 27. So instead I tell them I'm 22 when I know I'm only going to see them once. It's so annoying people think life's over after 25 >.< I try not to lie, instead I chose not to tell. If they ask a direct question however, I usually tell the truth. Oh another thing I lie/joke about is my job. No one I've met so far knows what a regulatory affairs is on first hearing, so I just tell people I'm a legalised drug dealer. Bad thing is they usually come back with ohhh.. pharmacist... then I /facepalm and have to explain anyways. |

It is a prediction, not a lie. If he specifies when it will grow, that Schroedinger effect works until that time. At which point if it doesn't grow it is a lie and then it grows. I would be lying if I said I never lied, but with you guys I tell the truth mostly. Sometimes I bend something a little to make a point, but not very far. |

I'd like to separate 'lying' from 'dishonesty'... because while it's dishonest, to (for instance) buy a thing and then hide it so I won't have to admit to spending money it's not a lie unless I'm asked. And there are levels... if I hide it on purpose that's more dishonest than bringing it into the house in plain sight and hoping Shel won't notice. If he eventually asks 'Hey, where did we get THIS thing?' does that cancel out my dishonesty if I tell the truth at that point? Amdee lies about weight-related issues. Do I? Of course not... no one ever asks me about them! I'll bet she never feels the need to hide a purchase, though. So... do I lie? No. (For the record, I'm not trying to defend my behaviour. I'm pointing out that the simple question Amdee asked is more complex than it originally appeared.) |

I've been known to buy junkfood at a gas station, eat it in the car, and dispose of the wrappers so that no-one will know what I've eaten. |

Yeah, sometimes I'll buy a shake on my way home from whatever and I'll end up drinking it really fast so I'll be done with it before I get home. Then I toss it in the trash can outside and no one knows. |

LUKE Obi-Wan! Why didn't you tell me? LUKE You told me Vader betrayed and murdered my father. BEN You father was seduced by the dark side of the Force. He ceased to be Anakin Skywalker and became Darth Vader. When that happened, the good man who was your father was destroyed. So what I have told you was true... from a certain point of view. LUKE (turning away, derisive) A certain point of view! BEN Luke, you're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view. |

I am actually a very good liar. Too good. So good in fact that I force myself not to do it because I feel bad for doing it, because I know there is no shred of doubt in their minds that I was lying. I think I first discovered this gift/curse when I was a young teen. Protip: One of the best ways to ensure a lie's success against a loved one, like a parent, is to act hurt that they could even think of accusing you of whatever they are accusing you of. See? Now you see a small glimpse as to why I try NOT to lie because of just how evilly I can do it. These days I only lie when it is necessary, especially when it is to spare someone's feelings. Doesn't happen extremely often. But sometimes lying is better than letting the truth be known. Not often, but it does happen. |
