I haven't read anything in a loooong time. Not really sure why. But now that I'm holding a baby for several hours a day, books have regained their appeal. I don't like suspense, horror, or action stuff. I also don't like overly romantic, pornographic or sappy crap. I'm not big on fantasy or science fiction either, really, with some exceptions. I really like historical fiction and biographies....my favorite books are "The Power of One" by Bryce Courtenay and "The Good Earth" by Pearl S. Buck. Both books I've read over and over....I'm currently rereading the Little House on The Prairie series (don't judge! lol) and I'd reread the Jean M. Auel "Clan of The Cave Bear" and its subsequent titles but I just read them for the 3rd or 4th time again last year. Any suggestions for books along those lines? Oh, and I also read the Game of Thrones books at my husband's request and I really enjoyed them...except for the last one. I never finished it as it totally lost my interest about two-thirds of the way through. I'm not sure if I would have liked the books on their own merit though, or if I only enjoyed them because I started with book 2 after watching the first season of Game of Thrones on HBO. |

Ha ha! Sorry, FarSky! I'm afraid of the dark so while I find horror stories fascinating, they tend to scare the crap out of me and since I am up alone and sleep deprived (really, one step away from seeing **** that isn't there due to lack of sleep) at midnight, 2, and 4am every night, I'm avoiding any scary movies and books for the time being. |

Hmm, Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Slayer? It is kind of a biography, and heck, as accurate as many biographies out on the shelves. There are some excellent biographies of Theodore Roosevelt out. Figure out why I like the man so much. Profiles in Courage is still a good read. There is a really good biography of Mother Theresa, called "Mother Theresa." Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power. Marmee & Louisa: The Untold Story of Louisa May Alcott and Her Mother There are probably good recommendations available from your local librarian as well. |

Try some alternative history, Harry Turtledove comes to mind. He writes all kinds of stuff, but you'll find just about all of his works in the science fiction section. Sometimes he mixes genres a little, but I really enjoy his pure alternative history a lot, and a glance at his Wikipedia page tells me I have a lot of catching up to do. Stuff of his that I've read and liked include his Southern Victory series (The south wins the Civil War and this changes both WWI and WWII), the Days of Infamy duology (the Japanese invade Hawaii as part of the Pearl Harbor attack) and In the Presence of Mine Enemies (Nazis won WWII, but there are still Jews living secretly in German society by the 1980s). And it looks like there's even more I haven't even seen yet that looks interesting. |

I just finished "The Worst Hard Time," about the Dustbowl. Pretty fascinating, some stories that will break your heart as a mother. Straight non-fiction, though. |

I always recommend this book because I enjoyed it so much: http://www.amazon.com/Short-History-Nea ... 076790818X A short history of nearly everything. It's a wide ranging history and science book in very plain language and told via interesting stories. |

Once an Eagle, by Anton Myrer. All Quiet on the Western Front, by Erich Maria Remarque Brooklyn, by Colm Toibin Three very different books, all fiction with reality based settings. The first two should be in your library, the third is rather new and might not be there. |
