I've tried blunt. Sometimes it works, sometimes (most, I think) not. Probably doesn't hurt to try, since everyone knows that the other type are all bullshit.

I think the best way to learn communication skills is to try different approaches and see what works and what doesn't. So it was a good idea.

Blunt works very well if you know your audience well enough to guage their likely response to it. A single chance meeting a year ago probably doesn't afford one that level of familiarity.
