okay; so I have noticed lately a large and increasing portion of my spam folder on m email account appears to be coming from Blizzard.... specifically from noreply, wowaccountadmin and controller at blizzard dot com. They keep requesting that I go to my account settings and verify the information or face account closure. one of the sites i am supposed to go to is worldofwcrcraft dot net; yes spelled incorrectly there have also been urls to the WoW site that are not actually links; and another world of warcraft - battlesecurity dot com There is even part of one of the emails that says that faxed copies of all of the ID materials are required in order to unlock my account. So not being a complete idiot... I do a search for known phishing sites and the misspelled worldofwcrcraft and battlesecurity sites are both listed. I also decided it may be a good idea... but from a completely seperate computer I also went to the official WoW site and logged in; after getting my authenticator prompt. And lo and behold... account is not frozen or anything of that nature. Dumbasses. I probably would be screwed right now if I did not have half a brain and the authenticator. |

You realize they are doing this to thousands of players at a time? It doesn't matter that you have a brain and know how to use it. Lots of players out there do not. |

Of course; they are also sending these emails to people who do not even play WoW |

In some ways, the internet is one of the few places where Darwin is still alive and well... |

People that fall for these kinds of things deserve to have their accounts hacked. There is literally no reason not to have an authenticator at this point. |

From the store for $6.50, or if you have an iPhone/iPod touch, you can get a free one off the iTunes store. |

Though an authenticator won't protect you from some phishing scams. The page that you're directed to log onto can ask for your authenticator code as well. I assume that as you're logging onto the bogus webpage an automated system is feeding your responses into a real blizzard app and changes your password then notfies a person who logs onto it and proceeds to steal all your hardearned stuff. |

Hahah oh man, when are people going to learn the internet is not their friend. |

I've had my authenticator for over a year. I love it. Account stealing is big business. High yield for zero risk. They don't just get you from keyloggers/malware either. They have all sorts of sneaky things up their sleave. My coworker had his account stolen just because they found his email associated with his high school, and correctly guessed he used that as the answer to your secret question. Directly from a blizzard employee: If someone knows the answer to your secret question, it trumps everything. And if you want to have your secret question changed, you have to mail a separate section blizzard to do so and *hope* they feel like doing it (it's not a guarantee..... directly from the mouths of blizzard). |

I can't even find my secret question in the Blizzard support website. |

Hopefully blizzard is moving away from it if they're having a lot of problems with it. They seem to really be pushing authenticators (for good reason... and for 6 bucks, no shipping, there's no reason not to get one). |
