This thread is a tribute to Monte. I mean this straight, and true.

This is a largely economically conservative board, and quite frankly, while we do all have our individual quirks and various persuasions, we generally drive a fairly conservative social advocacy as well.

Those of us who feel this way live through a series of earned bonuses. We know triumph and pride. What it feels like to earn a promotion, what it feels like to move ahead, what it feels like to earn the right to have a home, to send your kids to college, to pay for your daughters wedding. We work hard, and we earn these things, through various pursuits of our own desires. Meeting pride with effort.

What truly makes us better though, is our ability to give back. To show that success truly does build character, and that character incorporates humbleness, and decency.

If you have a few spare hours this week, go spend it at a local seniors home or center, or better yet, the VA. Volunteer to help out the local Boy or Girl Scouts of America, or volunteer your time to coach, referee, or even teach an art class at the local Boys and Girls Club. Go to your old high school, or the high school in the town you live in now, and ask if you can tutor. Go down to your local town hall, and ask about Youth Advocacy, working with the court system to mentor kids without active parents who are becoming stuck in our legal and social systems.

Put your money where your mouth is. Do something extra this month.

Lets show Monte why we're right.

Doing all of those things is fine and Dandy, but I disagree with your motivation.

Do it because you want to, not to prove anything to anyone.

The proving is secondary. The primary motive is not to show the superior benevolence of hard work and capitalism. The primary motive is to help others. When it gets hard to give, give harder.

I agree with that. I do it all the time. Every day.

I plan on it. :)

This isn't much, but I gave $10 to a lady at work who lost some stuff to smoke damage in an apartment fire.

We had a fund raiser the day before which raised ~$800 for her.

I have traditionally not been a big giver to charity, because: 1.) I've had to scrape to get by as is, and 2.) I cannot see where my money is really going. For all I know, most if not all of it is just lining some exec's pockets.

Thanks, Rodahn. But that isn't the point of this thread. I don't want you to post what you've done.

I would advise that giving acts rather than money is best, because you dictate the benefit to others by your actions, and you see the effect. Money is easy to give. Giving money is an out, paying others to do good works. Giving time reflects character.

Don't anyone post what you've done.

This isn't for e-stroking.

This is for doing good.

Just do more, do extra.

Yeah, I meant to continue that with: I need to start contributing more, to make up for a long time of not doing so. I like the feeling you get from helping people.

Somehow that just didn't make it into my original post (I blame Angelina Jolie for distracting me).

Speaking of Monty...

I've not seen him. Perhaps he's done with this community.

Is his suspension up yet?

Wouldn't surprise me.

Didn't he still hang out on IRC? He's probably just laying low for now.

Monte has only entered the IRC channel once, which was immediately after this suspension was issued, to discuss the suspension. I have not seen him since.

He'll be back when he feels like it.

Maybe today, maybe next week, maybe never.

Its up to him, not going to drag him to a keyboard and force him to post.

This is not the thread for them. This thread has a different purpose.

Which is why I didn't say them.

Regardless of a thread's purpose and whether I said anything of substance or not, we'll all post how we see fit, within the confines of the rules, thank you very much.

You practice a special kind of dickery, don't you. What's your purpose in this thread? To read your own font?

I'm a little unclear on how a thread calling on people to do more of something Monty doesn't really believe we do anyhow will convince him of much of anything. Doubly so when you don't want us to post what it was (which I agree with), and even if we did list it all, it would simply come off as bragging at best and self-righteousness at worst.

I'm guessing it was just meant to be a reminder or suggestion to everyone to be extra helpful to others or random acts of kindness and such....which is cool, it just maybe wasn't worded the way that some prefer.

I can appreciate this to some extent. But I can't say I'd be doing it with the right heart before God. I give a very significant amount of my income to charity. I teach Sunday school. I spend time with my little brother through the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program.

At this point, I feel I am doing what God wants me to do. I'll do more when the Lord our God lays it on my heart to do so.
