I laughed.

Quote:
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Republican state Sen. Roy Ashburn said Monday he is gay, ending days of speculation that began after his arrest last week for investigation of driving under the influence.

Ashburn, who consistently voted against gay rights measures during his 14 years in the state Legislature, came out in an interview with KERN radio in Bakersfield, the area he represents.

See? Even gays don't think gay marriage is a good idea.

I didn't know the first thing about Bakersfield, but one quick trip to its wiki confirmed my suspicion that it's a very conservative place.

So, did the guy basically sell himself out in order to appeal to his constituency?

Or was he just reflecting the will of his constituency in his voting? From the article:
Quote:
Ashburn has voted against a number of gay rights measures, including efforts to expand anti-discrimination laws and recognize out-of-state gay marriages... [Equality California's] executive director, Geoff Kors, said Monday that he hopes the senator's revelation will lead him to change his voting patterns.
Aside from what you personally think is the right side of the gay rights debate, should anything change? Given Bakersfield's conservatism, what is his vote supposed to reflect? This looks like a straight-up example of the difference between legislators as delegates or trustees of the public.

Edit: Or, you know, it could just be the guy loves holding office more than he loves his own dignity, but hey, that doesn't leave much up for debate.

I think that if his town is primarily conservative, and have been trying to stay conservative, there is nothing wrong with voting the way his constituents prefer. It is better than getting into office and then ignoring all of the people you serve.

Is he? Don't people have the right to remain in the closet if they want to? Being gay does not obligate you to vote the way the majority of gays do, nor represent them int he legislature if you're elected to it.

That's no different than the claims that blacks in the legislature have some duty to represent blacks that are not in their district. Being a member of a minority does not give that minority some moral claim over you. The idiots from whatever organization has been "scoring" him in the article don't get that; he represents his constituents, not them. Then again, we're talking about morons who think not getting added to discrimination laws or not having a day of recognition for Harvey Milk is "denying them the most basic rights."

His homosexuality is his sin to deal with. I only care as I do for all lost sinners.

Now as far as his ability to govern:

I hate to break it to ya, but there are no sinless legislators

Has he ever lied about being homosexual? Or did no one ever ask?

I don't see being homosexual mutually exclusive with supporting a biblical definition of marriage.

Also we should propably be more concerned with his endangering the public by getting behind the wheel blitzed than we should his homosexuality

Yes, the DUI seems to be downplayed next to him saying he likes guys.

It shouldn't be. Homosexuality isn't a crime, especially here. Driving under the influence is, and much more dangerous to those around you (assuming you practice safe sex).

Especially since he was driving a Senate vehicle.
