This story was posted in a physician's forum I follow, and I thought I would share.

Quote:
An economics professor at a local college said that he had never failed a single student before, but that he had once failed an entire class. That class had insisted that Obama's semi-socialism worked and that "no one should be poor and no one should be rich". Evenly spreading the wealth would be a great equalizer.

The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan". All grades would be averaged and everyone would receive the same grade so no one would fail and no one would receive an A...

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy.

As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.

The second test average was a D! No one was happy.

When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.

As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

All failed, to their great surprise, and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.

This is a legend which has been circulating for some time. Illustrative? Maybe. True? Not.

Did they take a survey of every econ professor in the country to make sure? Source please.

They don't have to. There's no way he would do this, a professor that fails his entire class would be in for serious sanctions, you're expected to pass a certain percentage.

Rynar: I linked the source, its the little bit of blue text that magically underlines when you mouse over it. You have a problem with the source? Good for you.

I'm actually reasonably sure it's just another nice parable, cleverly used to illustrate a point, and has never happened for the duration of a semester. I'm also sure a professor could absolutely get away with doing this for a few weeks of class in order to teach a truely valuable lesson in economics. It's so reasonable, in fact, that I'd wager dollars to doughnuts this lesson has likely been taught in many different classrooms for a few weeks.

I've failed 95% of a class of graduate students before. I've failed 100% of a class of undergraduate students before. It's fun stuff.

I thought you mentioned at one time that you had a minimum percentage you had to pass? Or did you mean an aggregate percentage, not a percentage of any one class?

You'd have had to send your minions to destroy their entire families before I'd believe you'd be having "fun", Doom.

Graduate classes? Not so much either. If they can't do the work, they wash out. Undergraduate classes? It took me 2 years and 22 grade appeals to sort that out. Plus I got dressed down by a whole bunch of people. 100% of the class still ended up failing.

If you're proposing a new form of edible currency, I'm all for that.

Whoa, that is blowing my mind. The more of our currency we eat the more scarce and valuable the remainder remains. Its how a consumption driven economy should work lol.

Sounds yummy, but I believe all available edible currency will soon be diverted
to stave off the forthcoming "health care crisis".

Seems like an odd thing to be proud of for an educator.

Not really; I take pride in my work. If my students took pride in theirs, they might actually put in the effort required to pass. For the undergraduate class, 29 of 30 students failed to turn in their final paper on time. 17 of 30 did not turn in one at all.

Teaching undergraduate classes is a mixed bag. At least 70% of the students have no business being in college in the first place. Of the 30% who can be passable students, 50% have no desire to pass their classes. So, 15% of the students who enroll might actually deserve to be there, but 90% of them have such abysmal educational foundations in the first place, I'm often left wondering what the hell our primary and secondary schools are teaching.
