Do you find the phrase "shove off" offensive? |

Depends on the context. Telling someone to shove off a boat happens all over the world every day with no offense taken by anyone. Telling someone to shove off in a belligerent manner usually isn't so much offensive as escalatory to an already difficult situation. Now if you want to describe a particular situation in which it was used instead of throwing a multiple meaning phrase out there and letting people assume the context in what you are asking, that is your choice. It isn't a very good question though. |

I honestly find it no more offensive than being told to "f*** off" and I am a firm believer that occassionally people (myself included) need to be told just that. |

See, I think it's less offensive than that. For example: Offensive ---> Defensive **** off -> Shove off (British English probably "sod off") -> Quit it/Knock it off -> Please stop |

It isn't a very good question though. Perhaps, as connotation is certainly important. I'm a bit more concerned about the phrase in general of course, and not the nautical usage. Specifically, as I'm sure you know, in regards to response to a perceived insult I had in the General Forum. I posted my perceived "hierarchy of politeness" above to Darksiege in regards to similar phrases, but I'm curious as to whether that matches with other people's. See, I wanted to assert my anger at being insulted without being all-out impolite, but if people (such as DS seems to) find its on an even-keel with "**** off," I'd rather not use it. |

I just got to the end of that thread... I read most message board from the bottom thread to the top, so I saw this one before I saw that one... my bad. And yeah... in that other thread, "**** Off" would have been a horrible thing to go with. |

I don't think the phrase is necessarily offensive, but it certainly is going to incite a harsh response. Nobody's going to back down if told to "shove off". Them's fightin' words. |

Over the seaaaaa let's go men. We're shovin right off, we're shovin right off again.... http://vodpod.com/watch/3656573-daffy-d ... the-sailor Eh it all depends on context as others said. I cant think of any case where it would be particularly pleasant. |

I think it's telling someone would think that the idea of an appeal to popularity matters. |

Taskiss wrote: I think it's telling someone would think that the idea of an appeal to popularity matters. Ignoring your passive aggressive BS, as usual, I have to ask, why? Urban dictionary has it as the "Canadian" equivalent of "get lost." That doesn't tell me much though, such as whether most people find it offensive. Whether something offends us is subjective, and as such an "appeal to popularity" is the only well-reasoned way to determine if a phrase is largely offensive. |

Whether something offends us is subjective, and as such an "appeal to popularity" is the only well-reasoned way to determine if a phrase is largely offensive. Why? Given your previous posts in the General forum and the immediate creation of this poll and the question asked, one could conclude that an appeal to popularity was an attempt to absolve responsibility while simultaneously continuing an argument that resulted in a locked thread. It dovetails nicely with certain observations others have made, enough so that I consider it an affirmation of those observations. Perhaps, since those observations proved so prescient, you might consider the suggestions made. |

Telling someone to shove off is like calling someone a butthole. It's not as bad as *******, I guess, but means the same thing and will be taken the same way (rightfully so). |

In all fairness, Taskiss, the poll was created before the thread in General became locked. |

Taskiss, why are you ascribing motives to DFK! that aren't there? He's not continuing an argument. He is genuinely interested in the reception of "shove off", for future reference. |

It's certainly not as bad as "Get ****". Which is an awesomely inflammatory thing to say. And when I say awesome, I mean it is both extremely inflammatory and it's just **** badass. |

Admins can set the bad word filter to replace any matches with an input of your choice. So, no matter what the bad word, it would be possible to replace it with "****," or "poopie." |

I'm not trying to absolve myself of anything, I'm trying to determine whether something I feel isn't offensive is held by the subject population (Gladers) to be offensive. See, I want to actually have things be taken as I meant them, and with text-only (no body language or intonation), that's extremely difficult. This is especially true of slang, which was basically the entire subject of the thread you're talking about (so I won't get back into that). Bottom line: only 25% of the respondants here find it offensive. Had that been reversed, I'd have made a correction and apology for potential offense. |

Why use it if it offends 25%? We're not talking about a phrase with any significant value. |
