Amazing the sense of smell of everything returning....in a few days, you'll actually begin to taste more flavors when you eat too...that part is pretty awesome.
I was totally mortified after quitting and smelling people who just had a cigarette...all those years I had no idea just how offensive my odor was to those who did not smoke.

I always thought the past tense of QUIT was QUAT. I don't care, even if it isn't. That's what I am using.

Crossed the 100 cigarettes not smoked threshold which was kind of a mental milestone for me. Still no cheating, cravings are arriving more infrequently but much stronger.

Not sure when I can consider myself a non smoker and hopefully drop my guard somewhat, one week? one month? when I stop taking the Chantix?

That's what I was thinking but the dosage runs for another 74 days. That's a long time to be on edge.

You don't need to be on edge, you're just getting closer to your goal one day at a time. Make a countdown on your calendar or something and cross off the days to becoming a non-smoker. It might feel like more of an accomplishment, and visualizing it that way could also be motivating.

You're planning on being a non-smoker the rest of your life, right? Don't make the trip too easy.

The biggest reason I did not go back to smoking is because my last quit was just too damn hard to want to go through that again. Seriously.

I think most people fail because, like alcoholics, they quit once and figure they can quit at any time. I quit once for about a year and went back to it, I think every subsequent failure since then has been because I was able to quit before. Now I know better, if you are lucky enough to have a second chance, don't take it for granted under the assumption that there will be a third, fourth or fifth chance.

My father quit smoking cold turkey. He smoked camel straights from the time he was 15 until he was 60 or so.

He was a defiant smoker all of his life. It was his choice, and he didn't care what anyone else thought.

Then one day, he decided he didn't want to smoke any more. No one really knows why (he had no recent health issues or Doctor visits). He just decided he didn't want to smoke any more and stopped.

He said it wasn't difficult at all. Something just flipped in his brain that made him not want to do it, and he didn't. He claimed that he had no cravings at all, but did say that he missed the physical aspect of having something in his hand (a nervous habit I guess).

My mother, who also smoked most of her life, also quit cold turkey. Some time in the late 80's or early 90's she had to spend a week in the hospital because of a vascular problem in her leg. She just assumed the hospital was a no smoking area and never even asked the nurses about it (it turns out she could have been wheeled out to the smoking area if she had asked).

The funny thing about her story is, no one in her family (husband and three children) really noticed, or gave it much thought, until the day she was discharged. She said something in passing about not having smoked in a week, and decided she would just become a non-smoker. She handed me the partial pack of cigarretes from her purse and asked me to throw them away for her. She never smoked again.

I've never smoked, so I am not speaking from experience other than what I mentioned above, but I think that there is a big difference in the quitting process if you can get to the point where you don't want to smoke (as opposed to knowing you shouldn't).

I suspect quitting because you don't want to smoke any more is a lot easier than quitting because other people think you should.

That is a very interesting point. I guess I have viewed the motivations as the same but I don't want to smoke anymore (because I know I shouldn't) is actually very different from I don't want to smoke anymore (because I don't want to smoke anymore). The first is truly an extrinsic motivation masquerading as intrinsic while the second really does come strictly from oneself. Hmmm... not sure what to do with that but I need to ponder it further.

Ten days in, no cheating, 200 not smoked.

Physical and emotional effects:
Have a damn near constant sore throat and have been very angry. So far I've kept that from friends and family; instead I've funneled into irrational hatred of inanimate objects (yeah **** you toothpaste) and a fantasies of punching strangers.

I have noticed some mental effects related to either smoking or Chantix. I've been quietly feeling lonely, couped up, and scared. Also I constantly find myself feeling like I've forgotten something. They crept up on me slowly and rather unexpectedly.

Hop, I went through anger and fear and loneliness when I quit too. I suspect it had a lot to do with the fact that I smoked cigarettes to keep all those emotions in check and when my *crutch* was gone, I had to re-learn how to deal with being angry and scared and lonely without that chemical fix to take it away....the pendulum will eventually come back around and even itself out.
For me, I kind of had to grieve for a little while because I really felt like I had lost a *friend* when I quit smoking...I missed my "lil buddies" (who were slowly killing me, haha!) and actually cried over it.
Much better now though! :thumbs: :thumbs:
You will get through it too...just wanted to let you know that what you're going through is normal and it will go away once you get used to being a non-smoker.

The Chantix really hit me hard yesterday, I don't think I will be going the whole 90 days on this stuff. On day 19 now, still no cheating and while the cravings are getting stronger they are are also far fewer. I will re-evaluate whether I will still be taking my meds come day 30.

Starting my last week of Chantix. The bulk of the time it was easy, but these past two weeks have been rough. If anyone's on the fence I'd recommend it but say be mindful of yourself.

Hopefully withdrawal isn't bad.

Same here. My doctor is always trying to get me into a stop smoking class. That will just make me want to smoke right in their faces. Leave me be, I will quit on my own. Keep nagging me and I will kill you with second hand smoke!! :x

The Chantix wasn't bad and I'm going on six months now. Literally the only time I want to smoke is after anti-smoking ads.
