At the gas station this morning some lady gave me a free sample of Aqua Hydrate, an alkaline water product because, "we live acidic lives, have acidic thoughts, blah blah." I didn't have the heart to tell her that our GI tract pumps out crazy acids in order to break down and digest our food. Our bodies have evolved a very complex system of acids and bases to regulate its own pH and while I might appreciate the liquid version of Tums in the event that I have heartburn at some point, I don't think you should be marketing this as broad-based every day beverage.

Do acidic thoughts give you brainburn?

I hate marketers pushing their product as if a human body is like a non-living appliance. We're not.

It's like this infomericial I saw about a product that "cleanses your colon" because you have all this "clogged up (stuff) in your gut, and that is what is attributing it's large size." Bull. Bull. BULL!

Your colon is a living organism that actually does a superb job of keeping itself clean. It is not like your sink's drain pipe.

It's extra silly if you know that human blood is actually slightly alkaline.

Fun fact: there's this handy little enzyme called phosphofructokinase which is fairly critical for glycolysis. And glycolysis, as it turns out, is pretty drat important for your brain since it kind of needs ATP to function. If your blood ever did become slightly acidic -- I'm not sure of the exact limit, but 6.4 will definitely do the trick -- your brain would go into Power Save mode, more popularly known as "a coma".
