So, a couple months ago, I started going to a nutritionist, and we've got the diet/food thing nailed down, but she brought up the E word...

I ABSOLUTELY *HATE* to exercise. Ive done it before, had a personal trainer etc for like 14 or 15 months, and I hated every day I went. I keep hearing people say 'oh, you'll get used to it" or "you'll feel a rush when you're done :D " or some nonsense like that. Thats total BS. I never felt that

Am I doing something wrong? :\ It just seems like such a waste of time and a horrible thing to do...

I go to the gym 3-5x per week for the past 2ish years and every time I think to myself that I'd rather be at my own funeral. I'd say you have it right.

I really dislike exercise as well, even though its absolutely necessary that I do it, both for work, and health.

It is not, however, a waste of time or a horrible thing to do. The benefits are worth it in terms of your health. That's objectively true. There's no room for argument on that subject.

You don't, however, need to do some ass-kicking workout every day to get sufficient exercise. Walking, swimming, biking are all good exercise. Maybe a local baseball or softball league for a reasonably low-intensity sport. Maybe a martial arts class would be your thing; there's lots of varieties from small humble highly traditional ones to ones that are run by drill-sergeant like assholes, to family ones, to ones that are essentially just an exercise class that involves some kicking.

So yes, I sympathize, exercise sucks. I don't mind exercise I get in the context of doing something else; I used to do 10k roadmarches in full gear like it was nothing because when you're the platoon leader you don't think about how much it sucks; you think about what you have to do. When I'm tracking aliens or chasing them, my main concern isn't "damn I'm **** exhausted" it's "how am I going to catch these guys?" (In fact, the answer is usually "you're gonna catch the slow ones, and leave the fast ones to the younger, faster guys to catch!")

So basically yes, you need to get out there and do something. Get the idea that its a waste of time out of your head. That's wrong. Find whatever sucks the least if everything sucks, and do that. Accept that if you don't, you're going to develop health problems, probably early on. It is not fun to be going to the hospital for heart problems. That can happen to you a lot earlier than you think.

This. Combined with what DE said.

You don't need to go lift weights in a gym or take a crossfit class.

Walk, ride a bike around the neighborhood, swim... Just be more active. I lost 30 pounds just walking for 60 mins a day and controlling what I eat. I didn't kill myself in a gym or anything.

Just like quitting smoking, it's a lot harder until you actually decide that you want to do it. Once you do, it's easy to set aside anything else until you've reached your goal.

If your current activity level is zero, or near zero, even a small amount of activity will make a difference, especially if you are improving your diet at the same time.

Find things that are invigorating to do, that you enjoy. It doesn't have to be going to a gym (I *hate* those too).

Go for a brisk walk, or a bike ride in the park. If the weather outdoors is too *insert bad weather here*, you can get yourself a cool, shiny, treadmill desk setup!

I'm with ya, I hate exercising for the sake of exercising.

But I love riding my bike, and walking ("hiking" if you want it to sound better) in the hills and mountains. Find something that's fun, and it's not exercising. Just seconding what's already been said, but, yeah, that's the key. I've just accepted that I'll never be buff and stuff, but if you want me to ride from LA to San Francisco, sure, I can do that. And it would be a gas.

Exercise is not a waste of time. It gives results that help you in the long run. You don't have to love it, but make it a task that you complete, at least a few times a week.

Are there aspects of your job you don't like? Do you still find a way to complete them? Look at exercise as something like that. Don't feel bad about not liking to exercise, it doesn't fit for everyone. But...you can still do it for your health benefit and concentrate and enjoy things you love to do.

Find something you like doing that is also exercise.

For a while that was fencing for me, then horseback riding, swimming, blacksmithing, and now biking.

If you like what you're doing, and it also gets your heart rate up, it's much easier to do.

I hate exercise!! Let me repeat, I HATE exercise!! However, I love walks in the park and swimming (once the water heats up...sun takes forever to do its job :P). I would love horseback riding, but most of the stables that rented horses in my area have closed down. :(

As others have said, find something that you enjoy doing that gets your body moving and your heart rate up. Dancing is very good, if you enjoy it. I've been known to crank up the tunes while cleaning the house, and just sway to the music as I dust, vacuum, etc.

the "rush' or "runner's high" s an endorphin high that you get when you are already in good shape and can push through so your body starts kicking out painkillers because you're pushing its limits. I'm not convinced its healthy, but whatever. I've never heard of someone who wasn't already in excellent condition getting that runners high though.

Consider an activity that has other objectives that you're not focusing on the exercise itself. While I can't schedule martial arts in my life right now, and am having to settle for stationary bike, that never felt like work. Nothing gets your mind off of how hard you're actually working like trying not to let someone kick you in the head, or put your arm in a Kimura. But the same could be said for playing basketball, water polo, etc.

If you want to stick with it, don't select an exercise that's simply swimming laps, jogging on the treadmill, using a StairMaster, or jazzercise until you develop the discipline. Find something you enjoy that is ALSO work, even if its breakdancing or zumba.

Try just going to the park and taking walks, then.

Understand this, though: Exercise is not optional. If you don't do it, your body will eventually inflict the consequences on itself. In your OP you claimed it seems like a "waste of time and a horrible thing to do". Both of these things are demonstrably false.

Find some way to expand your interests if none of these things interest you. The bottom line, however, is that your nutritionist is doing his or her job. They shouldn't stop; they should be hounding you until you start doing something. Life cannot be all sitting in the air conditioning every day. We just aren't made that way.

This may come off sounding harsher than I intend it to, but If this is honestly true then maybe you just need to accept the fact that you're never going to be that healthy. I'm not particularly interested in exercising either but I'm interested enough in living to go through with it.

Why are you going to a nutritionist? Someone that doesn't really care about getting healthy doesn't do that...

So, if you have the discipline to eat healthy...then you have the discipline to exercise. They are both difficult tasks to do. Just pick something convenient to do that raises your heart rate for 1/2 hour 3-5 days a week. Start slow then work up as you feel better. Or, just keep doing that.

This. Like Lenas, I don't meant to sound harsh, but either exercise and get healthy, or don't. You don't have to like it, but you do have to do it...or choose to be unhealthy.

You really dont have to do much. I wouldnt subject myself to hours of a treadmill for example either, that's a fate worse than death to me. But if you like it then by all means!

But go for a walk is all you really need to get going. Maybe there's a store you like a mile or so away you could walk to. Use stairs if you have the option, not the elevator. At work get up a few times and walk around. Dont over think it, you just need to get the ball rolling.

The process of exercising isn't always fun. You do it for the results. Exercise makes you live longer, feel better, and look better. It's a choice of whether you think these things are worth the annoyance. It's a personal decision, and you need to weigh the pros and cons. Anyone would walk a mile if they knew a million dollars was at the end of it.
