Anyone have any experience exercising when it is really hot and humid? It is REALLY hard to do anything at all except sit inside in front of the AC from the end of May until the end of August down here...maybe part of the reason Mississippi is so fat? I have watched what I have been eating without dieting and have been trying to walk several miles a week and I've dropped back down to my pre-baby size 5 (with a lil extra, haha!) and I'd like to keep it that way. I'm also enjoying the energy that comes from regular exercise. BUT! Now its getting sooooo hot! I usually drink nothing but water, and lots of it, but even that doesn't help. My son and I go outside and have to come back in after just 15 minutes because 90-something degrees and high humidity is like an energy drain....its amazing how quickly it happens. And its only going to get worse....it will get even hotter and more humid, believe it or not. I want to keep walking, but seriously being outside for even 20 minutes is absolutely exhausting. Tips? |

Get a Camelbak. I rode my bike for five weeks through California, including quite a few days in hot foothills and desert. The Camelbak saved me - seemed to be very efficient to constantly take small sips of water all day while riding, rather than having to reach down and get a water bottle, etc. |

The only thing you can do is suck it up, sadly. I was never able to get used to running in the hot and humid at 3 in the afternoon completely, but it got a little better. Also, be wary of consuming only water. You must maintain your saline balance or you won't actually rehydrate yourself. Get some electrolytes (it's got what plants crave!). If money is no object, Pedialyte is the best, but sugar free or low sugar asports drinks also work well. |

Like Raf said, make sure you are getting some electrolytes in with the water, and drink water while you're taking your walks, not just before and after. A camelback would be good as well. Try to do your exercise early in the morning or in the evening, avoid the heat of the day. Wear as little as you think is appropriate for being out in public. |

You could do some indoor stuff if that interests you. Even just body weight stuff if you have no equipment. For walking or running try and find shade and breezes. Keep hydrated and if you can dump a bit of water on your head or back of your neck that helps. |

Yeah, I wondered if maybe I should be drinking something besides water. Pedialyte is so nasty though and it is hard to find a low sugar sports drink. My body refuses to tolerate artificial sweeteners too. I remember when I was in Northern California a number of years ago that they had little packets of electrolytes that you just put in your water. Do they still have those and where would I find them? And what's a camelback? Is that one of those little bags thats like a backpack with a hose coming out of it? I may have to start getting up early and taking the dogs for a walk because its about 70 in the early morning compared to still 90 something in the evening around here. Raf, I'm glad you said you never got used to it....I've been down here for 15 years now and I still wilt just like I moved here yesterday. My body was made for the Pacific Northwest weather, not the south. It amazes me how some people down here run around and work and play and exercise in the full heat of midday and it seems like no big deal to them. Indoor stuff....I need to start doing sit-ups. I'm getting a little pooch. I remember in high school when it got too hot we would do aerobic videos inside...I forgot about that. Thanks Dash. |

Last summer I jogged 3 miles 3-4 days a week in 100+ degree weather. Yeah, it sucked. But I just couldn't do the treadmill thing in my house plus the feeling of walking into a 75 degree cooled house when your head is boiling is about as awesome as it gets. |

Get up at around 6-7 am, before the sun is really over the treelines. It's not cool by any means, but it's definitely manageable. |

Sweet! Thinks Vin. I need to order some of those. Going to play softball tonight though so I may have to settle for gatorade. |

If you want to do it on the cheap, you can make your own, historical version of Gatorade and other electrolyte drinks: sekanjabin. And, yes, a Camelbak is the bag that you wear on your back with a hose, etc. They look more uncomfortable than they are, but for me the secret was that the hose and bite valve were right next to my mouth (clipped to my bike helmet). Just had to nudge it over to my lips to bite down and take a sip. Probably won't be quite as easy if you're running, unless you wear a helmet while you jog! |
