So, I figure this goes better here than General or the other forums.

I'm looking forward to having a more active post in this forum in the near future - right now I'm not physically able to do what I want to do for a major part of my exercise plan.

Next Friday, June 11th, I'll be going into surgery for my left hip. It's called "Birmingham Hip Resurfacing," and is supposed to be much better for "younger" people needing surgery (I'm just into my 40s) for hip conditions.

I'm just wondering if anyone else here has had this done, and what your results were post-op. I'm looking to get the right side done in August, and am looking forward to be pretty pain-free with a real range-of-motion back for the first time in years. I don't hobble or anything, but just can't bend my legs more than being able to walk & sit. Even when I'm standing, the right leg's muscles pull it into a bit of an angle, as a subconscious way of avoiding the bone-on-bone areas, I think.

Wish me luck/say a prayer to your deity or the universe (Tunare's included. ;)). This is the first surgery I've had, other than like wisdom teeth. I'm not scared, only slightly nervous, but mostly optimistic about the outcome. My surgeon's done almost 700 of these, and only had 6 problems. Pretty damn good success rate, methinks.

I have only heard wonderful things about the Birmingham Hip! We do them at the hospital I work at. Someone I work with had it done in her 40's due to a degenerative problem and the only thing she regrets, is not having done it sooner.

Good Luck!!

Well, first one's done. Aside from the pain of the abused muscles (which I assume happened during the 55 minute surgery) and the swelling, I'm in decent shape.

My muscles are a bit of a dichotomy - the ones closest to the hip joint are a little loose, so the joint seems to click & pop a tiny bit (which I hear is normal until they get stronger), and the larger muscle groups, like the quads, are really stiff both from swelling and from the limited range of motion I'd had in that joint for ~ 2 years.

I walked probably 1/2-mile yesterday thru one of the local malls, which surprised me. Gait's not there yet, but it will be. Very glad I did this, and can't wait to get the other one done so I can get all the rehab behind me.

Unbelievable. 2 weeks out, and I've nearly got that bounce, Arathain. I'm walking around w/ a bit of a limp, unless I use my walking stick.

Upper leg muscles (not just quadracep) are still kinda weak, but I stopped into work yesterday to drop off some papers, and ppl couldn't believe how well I was moving.

Happy times, indeed. Can't wait to get the other one done in Aug.

Update - yesterday I got my bike out for the first time in ~18 months - it's a recumbent trike by Catrike - looks like this:
Spoiler:

The reason I hadn't ridden in so long? Left hip. My range of motion was so diminished that as I was pedaling, my butt & half my torso would torque up because of the limiting in the hip.

Yesterday, it was perfect! Excellent RoM and nothing of the body torquing. Leg's weak still, but that'll come with time. I rode about 1-1.5 miles on my first time out again.

I'm just in shock that a 55 minute procedure could produce such a dramatic change. Mebbe I'll start a biking log, once I get back to work and a regular schedule again.

Three cheers for modern medicine and healthcare techniques.

Definitely do the bike log, that thing looks fun.

Here we go again. Hip #2 gets done on Friday. I can't wait to get it finished so I can rehab them both & look forward to a real (so to speak) pair of legs that move the way they should.

My goal is to be able to ski during the Christmas holidays - we've got a place in the NC mtns and my whole family will be there for the week. No double-black-diamond-suicides for me, but just to be able to ski at all will be a tremendous accomplishment.

Wish me luck/hold good thoughts/pray to your selective deity(ies) for me & my family, please.
