This is one of Rick Bayless' restaurants in Chicago, part of the Frontera Grill. This restaurants caters to the fine dining experience while Frontera Grill caters to the standard experience, and Xoco is a step above fast food.
My friend and I started off with cocktails and were served guacamole and chips. The guacamole was heavenly, with radish in it. I had a blackberry mojito that was good, but maybe just a tad too much blackberry pulp in it. But it wasn't blackberry juice, it was blended blackberry.
I moved onto a ribeye steak with a habanero marinade and a beautiful plate with leek and a cornmeal mix with cheese on it. It was gorgeous, but I ate it anyway. They also served tortillas to eat with it. It was fantastic. The ribeye was tender and tasty, with strong flavor from the marinade and the leek and cornmeal added extra texture and a different taste, especially when wrapped in the tortilla.
For dessert, I had a chocolate peanut cake with a red mole sauce. The cake was flavorful and the portion was just right. I got a Mexican coffee to accompany it, and it was the perfect choice. The coffee had notes of chocolate in it that fit perfectly with the dessert.
I would highly recommend going to this restaurant, but it won't be cheap. I'd rate it about 4 and a half out of 5 stars. It was one of the best meals I've ever eaten in my lifetime.
