NF and I are moving into his other house the first or second week of June...I'd like to have a garden, and I'll finally have the space to do so (HOORAY!!!), but I understand it may be too late in the season to plant much.
Any suggestions?

Still in Mississippi?

If so you can likely plant the same things there as I can in June.

Eggplant
Okra
Peanut
Peas, southern or cowpea
Hot pepper
Sweet pepper
Spinach, climbing or Malabar
Spinach, New Zealand
Sweet potato
Soybean

Oooo that sounds great!! I did some thinking after I posted this thread and realized that surely there should be quite a few options since in Mississippi we have a much longer growing season than many other places.
Definitely some peppers and herbs...I try to stay away from planting leafy greens though as they tend to get eaten rather quickly by the wildlife around here.

What about tomatoes? I'm not sure about your growing period but they are usually a good bet, especially for hot climes. It's too late to start from seed I'd imagine but a couple of plants from the nursery should do well.

Oh, and chicken wire cages can help with the wildlife problem!

What are your daily high temperatures in, say, August/September? If they're consistently over 90, tomatoes are out unless you pick a breed that is heat tolerant. Here in South Florida, our tomato season is the reverse of up north - summer is the time you can't pick tomatoes. The good thing is you get a spring crop and a fall crop.

Down here we have three growing seasons: spring, summer and fall.

Summer is way too hot for tomatoes. Fall is the best time, although spring is not bad.

Yeah, where I am it's even too hot for watermelon, haha, forget about tomatoes! Planted some watermelon last year and all but 4 or 5 of them cracked and split in the heat before they were full grown. My father in law shaded some of them and those were the ones that survived...stunted, but still edible. Waaaay to hot around here for too many months.
Probably fall would be good for tomatoes.

Really I have nothing. I want a garden (rosemary, tomato, carrot, etc.), but since I do not own a home, I am not making that kind of investment into someone else's property.
