Post subject: | Growing Bigger Potatoes |
Anyone grown potatoes before? I started a few plants just to experiment. I planted about a dozen but only two came up. I did this by digging a trench and gradually filling it in over time as the plants began to grow. I think I've figured out the problem in that I have to let the eyes grow out a bit more before I cut and plant, so that part is OK. The smaller plant witherered over the past three weeks, and finally died off, so I dug up the potatoes. I got probably ten little tiny (quarter to golf ball sized) potatoes with only one approaching normal size. The other plant is bigger and still green. Based on everything I'd read, you want to harvest the potatoes when the plant dies off. Then today I read that you actually want to leave them in the ground for a few weeks after the plant dies in order for them to reach full size. If anyone has experience with this let me know. I have a twenty foot row where I'll be able to put down a lot of potatoes but I'd like to get the process under control a bit more before I invest the space and time. |

You're hard core, man. Sorry, have never done it myself, though. Good luck. |

The second potato plant finally died off and I picked the potatoes yesterday. They were like, normal potato size, but there were only two potatoes. Going to pick up some seed potatoes if I can find them, maybe that'll make the difference. These ones were just from the grocery store. |
