Post subject:  Thoughts on a new kitchen design?

Kind of exciting and terrifying simultaneously. We have to live with this a long time if we get it wrong ;)

Current kitchen is a small boxy room. we have redesigned, emphasising symmetry and openness. We'll knock out the walls and make it part of the living space.

Small problem with the oven/larder and corner cupboard clashing but not sure of other options. The alcove is a fixed 100cm gap.

The hob is paired with an elica adiago downdraught extractor which is fancy but kind of sucks - our planning permission wont permit an overhead (drilling into neighbours floor ;-p )

Any thoughts on practicality of layout? Cabinet choices? Internals? Aesthetics?

Layout is this :
Image

Aesthetic is like these, but a harder matt/silk white with aluminium handles and plinths.

Units 1 & 2 should be transposed - i.e 30cm in pos 2, 60cm in pos 1

Positions 3, 7 & 8 all feel vaguely unsatisfactory. Any suggestions on better internals appreciated.

Positions 4 through 8 all have matched wall units above.

Drawer line is a singe line on sink run and outside island edge, 3 lines on inside island facing sink

Sticking with 20mm kensho silestone worktops & opticlear white glass spashback. Cabinets are all Leicht silk laquer white (not glossy) in a handleless design.

ALCOVE
1 - 30cm pull out larder, full height - set in existing alcove
2 - 60cm oven/microwave full height

SINK RUN
3 - 60cm full height to match fridge freezer in pos9. Storage -
ironing board, hoover, etc
- 10cm blanking panel to offset cupboard from wall, provide lght
switch mount, etc
4 - fully integrated washing machine. Tbd - either bosch or miele proably? Something QUIET.
5 - 45cm fully integrated dishwasher
6 - 100cm double sink unit. 3 hole tap/spray combo. Storage options?
Waste bins,drawers, etc?
7 - 45cm drawer as discussed before - internal hidden drawer
8 - 60cm drawer, same
9 - full size fridge freezer, 70/30 split
18 - 5cm end panel

ISLAND
10 - 60cm 2deep drawers, 1 cutlery
11 - 120cm 2 deep drawers hob unit (100cm induction), top cutlery/blank?
12 - 60cm 2 deep drawers 1 cutlery
13 - 60cm cupboard, top drawer - SHALLOW 35cm
14 - 120cm cupboard, top drawer - SHALLOW 35cm, plinth vent for extractor?
15 - 60cm cupboard, top drawer - SHALLOW 35cm
16 - 5cm end panel
17 - 5cm end panel

Can you post a pic of the room as it stands now?

We're knocking out the kitchen walls for this.

I've never liked islands in the middle of a kitchen. Just something else for me to bang into when I am moving around. If you need it for storage though, there isn't much to be done about it. Now if you are going to take out the two walls...I would put a bar where the south wall is. Assuming that the top of the pic is north. It would still open the kitchen up, it would give you a place for less formal every day eating.

That and I have always wanted a bar...with beer on tap.

Edit..

Your oven...does it have a flat top for cooking or is it just an oven? If you need the island for a cook top never mind what I said.

Its just an oven. The island has a hob & pop up extractor built in. The oven stack actually has a main oven, and a combination oven/microwave/grill, so we have two separate ones there.

Funnily enough we started out with a bar running over the south end but decided we had just ended up eating up far too much of the living area.

A bar would be too hard for me to pass up if I had the room.

If you plan on having open shelves like the ones in the photo above my only question would be is do you have a cat?
