I am currently out in the water, waiting for a break from the Norther, and planning food to eat while on a passage (ie. what to eat while sailing 12 to 24 hours).

The food needs to be something that can be eaten while moving and not easily fly off of the spoon or fork, so thin soup and dry rice are a bad idea. Also sandwiches are remarkably difficult to handle underway.

Some suggestions I have picked up and tried are Split Pea Soup, Black bean salad, Gorp, and energy bars. Having them ready and easily accessible gave me and my crew energy to keep going.

Also having a couple good steel thermoses and putting hot food like soup or chili in one, and the other with hot coffee or water is great. (It is amazing how chilled one can get in 50 degree weather with the wind howling!)

I am going to post some of the tasty recipes I have found, and welcome any suggestions you all have.

Black bean, Corn and Tomato Salad

3 tablespoons lemon or lime juice
2 tablespoons oil (olive, canola or vegetable)
1 can (16 ounce) black beans, drained and rinsed
1 can (8 ounce) corn
1 tomato, chopped
1 small onion, chopped
2 tablespoons minced fresh cilantro
dash of cayenne

Mix
Best if left to marinate an hour, but good immediately too.

Split Pea Soup in a thermos*

3/4 cup dried split peas
1 teaspoon salt
4 to 6 oz ham
1/2 cup diced onion
1 diced carrot
2 or 3 bay leaves
ground pepper to taste
water

1. Boil enough water to fill your thermos. Put the thermos in the sink and fill it with the boiling water. Stopper the bottle and let it preheat.

2. When all of the other ingredients are measured and diced, pour the water out of the thermos and save it. Put all the other ingredients into the thermos. Add the saved water until the thermos is full.

3. Pour all of the ingredients into a pan and recap the thermos to keep the heat. Warm the split pea mixture and boil for 3 minutes. Then pour the mixture back into the thermos. Cap it and let it sit for about 4 hours. (It can sit for up to 12 hours, if warm enough.)

4. Check the mixture at 2 to 3 hours and make sure it is still steaming. If not, return to the pan and bring back to boiling before returning to the thermos.

Found in German style butcher shops, and come in several varieties, the Jager sausage (as I know them) might meet your needs well. Depending on the style you can just hold them and eat them or if a little greasier than normal you might want to use a napkin to hold them. They tend to be salty.
