And have very little to go on. It is mostly a childhood memory. I think it was set in India, I remember multiple factions, possibly muslim vs hindu (not that I even know what those where). A train mas massacred, there where multiple walled defenses, and maybe a missing prince.. This was at least 20+ years ago

Were Sean Connery or Michael Caine in it? If both, then it's The Man who would be King, but I'm not seing anything in the plot that sounds like what you're describing.

Edit: Oh, maybe it's North West Frontier? Seems to have a few more of the elements you're looking for. Came out in 1959:

Synopsis for North West Frontier wrote:
In northwestern India soon after the turn of the 20th Century, Moslem rebels seek to kill a six-year-old Hindu prince to end his family line. Captain Scott of the British Army is ordered to get the prince out of the region safely. Adventure ensues as Scott sneaks the child away, through Moslem-held territory, by train. Also on board are the boy's American governess, an arms merchant, a cynical reporter, and two upper class Britons.

So, the elements don't all match up but could it have been The Wind and the Lion?

Synopsis for The Wind and the Lion wrote:
At the beginning of the 20th century an American woman is abducted in Morocco by Berbers. The attempts to free her range from diplomatic pressure to military intervention.

You're welcome, hope it helps.

And, The Wind and The Lion is a great movie, Shel. At least, it was when I saw it in the theater as a kid, not sure about now. It's also semi-factual.
