After announcing its new fall season, and teasing the new seasons of hits like "Glee," Fox had one more surprise up its sleeve at Monday's upfront presentation for advertisers.

Seth MacFarlane, creator of Fox animated series "Family Guy," "American Dad" and "The Cleveland Show," told attendees that he was working on another show for 2013: a re-imagining of the first-ever primetime animated sitcom, "The Flintstones."

“The very first cartoon character I drew at age two was Fred Flintstone,” said MacFarlane in a press release. “So it’s appropriate that events have come full circle, allowing me to produce the newest incarnation of this great franchise. Plus, I think America is finally ready for an animated sitcom about a fat, stupid guy with a wife who’s too good for him.”

The network promised a "modern day" take on the stone age family, who celebrated their 50th anniversary last year.

Deadline reports that this announcement followed "complicated negotiations" between 20th Century Fox TV and Warner Bros. Television (owned by Time Warner, which also owns CNN).

This new take on classic characters is sure to be one of the most talked-about series in the next couple of years, not unlike the 1994 live-action movie, which starred John Goodman.

Is the 's a contraction for MacFarlane was incredibly talented?

Now if Seth Green and the Robot Chicken rebooted it I would have some interest.

The Flintstones wasn't original material when it had its original run.

I think it's a waste of his talents, but If he wants to do it more power to him. I wonder if they plan to do a more wholesome comedy or "Family Guy with dinosaurs."

TV is all cyclical! Flintstones was caveman honeymooners, Family Guy is modern day Flintstones, new Flintstones will be....

It should be interesting to see what he comes up with when he puts Flintstones through the "macfarlandizer".

I don't know.... To each their own, obviously, particularly when it comes to humor, but while I think a few of the older seasons of Family Guy were genuinely great, I found the later seasons pretty repetitive and often just too harsh (e.g. picking on Meg became abusing Meg, the occasional rape jokes became a regular feature and much more blunt/graphic, etc.). And like Darkroland suggested, MacFarlane's other shows seemed formulaic and (in my opinion) not particularly funny.

Family Guy isn't nearly as funny now that McFarlane has 3 other (terrible) shows...
