I'm inclined to agree it's an enchanted suit of armor. However, what seems like magic to me is science to them. So..... it could be a robot.

And it is controlled by someone. It isn't something you just tell go, kill. They should have made it clear that the armor was being controlled by Loki.

It got hit with a giant hammer. I felt the Detroyer fulfilled it's narrative purpose in the movie.
