I also find 3D gimmicky (and rarely does it offer anything new or better to the movie watching experience.) That said, I still believe the movie theater is the only real way to watch a movie. Even a big 50+ inch LCD panel doesn't compare. Everything other than seeing it in the theater is just watching television.

We watch movies all the time in my friend's Home Theater room. 10' screen with an HD projector, and lots of speakers ( including a 10" subwoofer built into his couch, so you really feel the explosions :P ). Much better than the theater, because I don't have to worry about some one answering their cell phone during the movie, or someone coughing on me, or someone's kid's screaming, or.....

My next home will have a home theater room. Oh yes, precious, it will be mine.

Liam Neeson is apparently voicing Qui Gon (force ghost) in Clone Wars....

I had a major Geek Out moment watching Clone Wars tv series episode from Friday.

The ship that Lux & Ahsoka use is a Lantillian GX1 Short Hauler.... for those who owned the original SW:RPG (particularly the first published Campaign pack (that came with the GM Screen) -- it all took place on another GX1 Short Hauler called the Long Shot. Complete with a large map & Floor plans.

Earlier this season we saw the Z-95 Headhunters move into T-Canon as well.

I don't even like the Star Wars story that much, anyway. Yeah. I SAID IT.

Yknow, I don't even take issue with that...they're excellent movies to me, for the most part, but I've never been a huge *fan* (I've always preferred Lucas' *other* trilogy). But to suggest that anything but *maybe* Episode III is even *watchable* is...well, it's lunacy, is what it is!

Yeah. Sad.

That said, the Clone Wars cgi cartoon runs the gamut from mediocre to freakin' amazing. It's too bad they didn't get Matt Lanter instead of Hayden Christiansen for the prequel movies. (That said, he still wouldn't have ovecome Lucas's god-awful dialogue the way Ewan MacGregor did.)

No, Lucas isn't an "actor's director." That monotone way they delivered the dialogue was what Lucas wanted.. cause he's a fraud.

While true, I am finding that a 70" LED is a decent replacement. :D

To be fair, though, I love going to the theater not only for the size and sound, but also the ambiance. Watching a good movie with like-minded folks and knowing they're enjoying it too is like going to church for me. Just, y'know, less preachy and with better explosions. And they hit you up for money upfront, rather than mid-performance.

Soooo...some less bitter friends of mine wanted to go see this in 3-D.

The change from muppet Yodi to CGI was good. Looked much better. Nothing else really changed that I saw. Just glad I didn't pay for it.

How was the 3-D conversion?

I have a horrible time with 3D. I wear glasses and my eyes are bad so I might not get as much out of it as the next person. They didn't do anything out of the box to make it...OMG I just got shot in the face with a blaster but I did jump once or twice. It just seemed like a straight conversion. A lot of the action is just to frantic for 3-D.

Shitty acting or not, the one part I was looking forward to was the pod race. Had they wanted to blow a person away, they would have done more with it. At times...it just felt flat and uninspired.

The best part of the film is still the lightsaber fight at the end. It reminded me a lot of TOR. Two Jedi Vs. one Sith. One Jedi dies and the other just lives by the skin of his teeth.

I was asked by my nephew's mom if I would go in her place to take the kiddo. So I am going.

So I went yesterday. 3D didn't change a lot for me. There were some "oh that was nice looking" scenes(anything with 3D holograms for one). I felt the cheese level was under control mostly. I went for the kiddo and he had a blast. I think/hope he'll remember going to with Uncle Ryan and his BioDad all the days of his life. So I count it a win.

The whole experience made me think back to the first time I watched Phantom Menace in the theater. I remember the hype of the decade leading up to it, how great it was that we were finally going to get the continuation of our beloved series. I remember packing into that single screen theater on a Friday night, the exhilaration in the air. I remember the near standing ovation of that theater when Star Wars Burst onto the screen with fanfare. I'd never seen anything like it before or since, other than on a small scale with my nephew last night.

Of course for a myriad of reasons, the movie and its following sequels didn't live up to the hype. I'm fully aware that Lucas is beyond complicit in this. I can't wonder though if we didn't build up a generation of hype to a level that no mortal could attain though.

I firmly believe we did...but I still think that with an unbiased eye, TPM doesn't make for a very good (or even watchable) movie. The OT trilogy scripts weren't exactly Shakespeare, but they had heart (and interesting things happened). TPM is two hours of trade disputes, broken up by an overlong racing sequence and way too much of one of the most annoying "comic relief" characters ever created.

I'm certainly not one to worship at the altar of Star Wars...I find them to be really good movies (with some naff bits in the third one), but that's it. No real "fandom" aspect for me. AotC was also a letdown, but it's watchable, and RotS is almost-good (on the whole...there are bad parts and legitimately good parts, but the good more-or-less outweighs the bad). But I find TPM just flat-out terrible.

Fair enough. I think you captured the way I feel about it, other than to say the fight sequences were the only "improvement" over the classics. Also it was funny to sit next to kiddo and having his dad keep telling him to be quiet because kiddo has seen the movie countless times and wants to quote it. I wanted so badly to tell his dad: "It's your fault. You would have done (and probably did) the exact same thing at his age."

Lucas is changing A New Hope some more. He's expanding the Porkins character. These are changes I can get behind.

Greedo scene was excellent, as well as him "surviving".

Interesting. Never knew that Porkins was Lt. Eckhardt in Burton's Batman.

I had the oddest feeling that the best part of the 3D was the holograms. For the first time I felt like they were not 2D projections.

CGI Yoda WAS better and markedly so. The rest... I don't know. I tend not to notice 3D so I'm not sure how much it actually added to the experience.
