The director of District 9 is back with a new sci-fi movie.

Totally gonna see it. Know nothing about it, but will see it based on my love for District 9 alone.

Yeah, seeing D9 in the theater was a major "holy ****" moment. My friend and I likened it to what it must have been like to see Aliens upon its initial release.

Alien or Aliens? The first scared the hell out of me when I saw it. My mother and I used to go to the drive inn once a week, must have saw Alien three or four times that year. Aliens was just an action flick.

I see that the director Neill Blomkamp is playing off of one of the cooler elements from D9 - the "mech" suit.

Well, this review is pretty much exactly what I felt the movie would be, based on the previews: a garbage movie.

Haven't seen it, and probably won't, so I can't say for myself. But this movie just looked terribad.

That said, I have to disagree with your esteem for D9.

District 9 remains the only movie I have ever walked out on.

I have to ask why. I don't know anyone that even disliked it, personally I loved it.

If you consider yourself to know Raltar, or to know me, then you know some people that dislike it.

So what was the deal? I thought Sharlto Copley did a great job as Wikus (especially upon learning his part was almost entirely improvised), the alien effects were great, the aliens themselves were even empathetic, and there was a giant mech and guns that did mega damage. Sure, not the best film ever, but still an excellent sci-fi film heads above most of the garbage hollywood is putting out these days IMO.

For me? Two things:

1) a good or great actor does not make a movie.

2) "Waaah, apartheid was bad, waaaah" does not make a plot.

Social commentary of current events does not a plot make, no matter how you pretty it up with special effects.

With the cast being who they are, I expected them to rake it in, even without a plot, but in my opinion and from what I've read, it fared poorly at the box office. You sure can't tell by the way the media is slobbering over it though. Tied with the opening of "John Carter", I'm figuring it's a flop, and I liked JC.
