I read this on friday (bored at work) and wondered what you all thought.

I'm not sure it's a potshot but it's hardly funny, then again the content seldom is to me. Several people in the community based on articles I read while looking for the image for this thread are calling it a pot shot at the community.

Heh. Looks like one cartoonist is bitter.

It's not the world's fault that everything is moving to digital. I know several newspapers that are making the conversion/transition nicely.

Likely he is bitter because of just how rough it was to get a comic published and syndicated before the Internet. It was a cutthroat field and you had to fight to stand out and get recognized... and then pray you could find a newspaper willing to give you a slot. Which was also difficult because the heavy-hitters had no intention of leaving anytime soon. Schultz, Davis, Watterson, Peters, Parker & Hart, Armstrong, etc. all were established artists and working to stand toe-to-toe with them was no easy task.

But now, getting your cartoons out to the public is extremely easy. What matters now is if it's actually good. Being syndicated does not necessarily mean your comic strip is good (ie: Garfield. And this is coming from a man who at one time idolized Jim Davis)

Yeah, I wanted to be a cartoonist at one point in my life. It was quite an ambition for a long time.

It's so hard that this writer/illustrator team inherited this comic from someone else. quite a few of the long timers are now being done by second generation teams.

And they still suck.

Peanuts, Hagar, Hi and Lois, Family Circus...

all crap.

Yeah, I gave up on printed comics almost 20 years ago. The ones that I really miss are The Far Side and Calvin & Hobbes. They still bring genuine laughter even today.

Side note: Mad props to Bill Watterson never becoming a sell-out. Sticking to his own personal code so much, that he cancelled the strip instead of bowing down to pressure from on-high.

Calvin and Hobbes is available online daily, in original running order, here. Personally, I use the RSS feed. ;)

It will get better as your son gets older. Wait until you have one of those 'Dad and Calvin' moments, they're great!

The first time my son made me think of Calvin, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

Very cool. Although my wife did buy me the complete anthology in hardback for Christmas a few years back. But I think it's GREAT that they are out there for everyone to see.

Any chance there's something like this for the Far Side?
