I don't know if they didn't understand it, but there is definitely a lot of room for interpretation. Also, there is the fact that Lost: Season 1 is one of the most amazing seasons of television ever made. (ever.) Watch it anyway.
This, if you are not hooked after the first episode don't bother. Season two gets a little slow but gets up to speed near the end, same thing with season three. That being said, after that it is pretty much nonstop.
