They give a pretty solid ending. You could make a sequel from it, but it wasn't one of those left wide open. Sequel will likely depend on how much money it makes.

I just got back from seeing this, I grew up watching the giant monster movies, they were always my favorite from childhood, thank you Guillermo Del Toro! you gave me a wonderful piece of my childhood back in all its completly over the top, for the sheer joy of the crapy genre!

And now I am a firm fan of Idris Elba, he had a good comanding persona.

Now seeing him given more room to speak and project himself, he seems almost under utilized in Thor.

Watch the BBC series Luther. He's excellent (and finally the lead in a series). I think it's on Netflix.

Mostly good, a little slow in spots, and

Oh yeah, the last thing they try and almost forget about is the most efficient hand to hand weapon the Jaeger has?

Oh yeah, we have the sword. The girl remembers this? W E I R D!

I think there needs to be a little clarification on how this movie works.

Guillermo del Toro just made Voltron (with a cameo by Jet Jaguar) vs. Godzilla and the Toho Kaiju Stable. Why the **** are we discussing plot holes?

Loved it for what it was. Doesn't mean I can escape the critic in my head saying WTF.

That review has too many words, Mr. Sky.

Give me 15 word version.

Close proximity to the extra-dimensional entities has caused insanity in some forum members.

I haven't been able to see it yet, but hopefully in a couple weeks. :(

I've already seen it; I just wanted to make sure that I read your review with too many words correctly!

I just saw it again.

It was better the second time. You get it all right, Mr. Del Toro. You get it all right. If ever there was a perfect film to awaken the spirit of Saturday Morning Cartoons, Godzilla and the legendary Toho contributions to the fantastic, you have achieved it Mr. Del Toro.

Lord Doom's inner child is smiling.

*stealth edit* And some of the glosses, allusions, and nods to the Kaiju and Mecha and Popcorn Flick traditions are so deftly done as to be amazing. Del Toro certainly gets his nods in without making it a fan-service wankfest.

My only nitpick was that soooo much of the plot was taken straight out of

Spoiler:
Independence Day

I'd say more like Tranzor Z (or Mazinger Z if you're obsessive, but the one I saw as a kid was called Tranzor). But voltron was definitely superior.

As I mentioned to Khross last night, it's my theory that the guy who designed the Jaegers went off and got hit by a bus before he could write the manual, so they brought in some dude who stared at the things for a few minutes and went, "Yup. Those things are huge. Suplexing kaiju into liquid combat environments and "The Kirk" look like our best bets..." and then went off to write the manual. That's my the only thing I could come up with that would explain why "Sword + Omega Beam Hug" didn't immediately become standard combat procedure.

Spoiler:
Or "Omega beam" has a huge resource cost (either to the Jaeger directly or for reloading a shell/overcharged battery etc) that they've been told to not use it if possible

Um.. I'm pretty sure operating Jaegers at all is a significant resource cost that dwarfs whatever the additional cost for the use of their most effective weapon is.

And I'm pretty sure that "rebuilding entire coastal cities" trumps that.

Versions of Idris's speech that didn't quite make it.
