Whedon's direction is good enough. Lucas's writing is not.

Anyway, I saw this ST:ID yesterday afternoon. I'm still deciding on some things.

My first impression, though, is not that it was gratuitous fan service. There was a certain elegance to the idea that some things will happen the same way in an altered time line, even if they happen to different people in a slightly different scenario.

However, the problem was, the movie they were emulating is by far the best of the trek franchise. My son, who had never seen The Wrath of Khan before, when he watched the old 1982 movie, was crying when Spock died, and at his funeral. It was spectacularly written, and is the pinnacle of Shatner's acting ability, right there.

There was none of the emotion from STII in this movie, at all. It was a fun action flick, but it lacked everything that made STII most people's favorite in the franchise.

Also: in a series where most of the actors are channeling their 1960's counterparts, I was disappointed that I never once felt Cumberbatch was Montalban.

Which is the complete opposite of the way things should be, it should be pointed out. The divergent timeline was created by Nero's return to the past the day Kirk was born. Khan had already lived his formative years and been put under -- he should come out of deep freeze exactly the same man as Montalban's Khan, whereas with any crew Kirk's age or even a bit older, there's a compelling argument for them to have had different life experiences that would leave them with a different personality or attitude.

Well, to give George his due, his dialog is so bad that nobody can really compare. This is just as accurate:

George Lucas : writing ::! Lindsay Lohan : clean living

So, I've been waiting on my opinion on this film to settle. And I think finally it has.

I kind of hated this movie. This simpering, idiotic, insulting, lazy, worthless, piece-of-trash movie.

Did you just call this movie Jar-Jar Binks?

Wouldn't it be different in that the Starfleet officer was the one that thawed him out and threatened his crew? I don't remember the details on the original, but I thought that was different.
