I disagree through out the history of the Comic, cannonly Thor was way way more powerful then Iron Man. He was supposed to be somewhat more powerful then the Hulk. In terms of strength Hulk was stronger, but with all the tricks and powers if going all out Thor would have won (if willing to kill).

An interesting and probably earth ending fight would have been World War Hulk (at his angriest), vs Odin powered Thor.

I didn't make it! :)

$180 million on opening weekend internationally - still doesn't open in its biggest market until friday. 97% after 65 reviews on RT. Somehow I think Disney/Marvel/Whedon have something of a moneymaker on their hands, here.

No, War Hulk vs Odin Thor. There was a time when Apocalypse turned Hulk into his horseman of War. With his strength augmented by Pocky's tech, he was crazy-powerful. He literally stopped the unstoppable Juggernaut in his tracks. And the look on Juggy's face was priceless (greatest combination of "WTF?!" and "OH ****!!!"), right before he was uppercut into the next town.

But I agree, he was super pissed during World War Hulk. And with very justified reasons to be.

But even so, Hulk is one of those wildcards where you can't easily say Thor could beat him. Many people think that Hulk's "power" is strength. It's actually not. His ultimate power is that he is the perfect survivor. His will and his rage keeps him alive, and both are considerable.

His healing factor rivals (if not outright beats) others in the Marvel universe. I've seen him regenerate all of the flayed flesh and muscle off of his body back in seconds. He's survived ground zero nuclear blasts. He's survived extended periods underwater and in space. And theoretically, his strength and healing is unlimited (because he can always become more angry than he already is, and rage fuels them both).

He's a difficult fellow to kill. A problem that gave himself a hard time when he had to dispose of his insane, evil, megalomaniacal tyrant, alternate-future self.

I'm stoked to see the enormous reception Avengers has thus far gotten internationally, and can't wait to see it on our shores. Phe and I have tickets for the midnight showing (in 3D, unfortunately, as that's all that was offered...some shenanigans, I assume, from either the movie theater or the studio trying to bolster higher pre-sales) Thursday night.

I've heard nothing but fantastic things (and not just from geek press). That Whedon's impeccable instincts for team dynamics pay off in full. That he captures the utter joy of reading comics. That he brings his A-game as a director. That he managed the nigh-impossible feat of making the Hulk interesting, and even awesome. That unlike most Marvel movies, this one actually has a rousing, kick-ass third act. That the typical Marvel credits cookie teases a major, major development for the next Avengers film, one that falls into the "how in the hell are they going to pull that off?" field.

I want all of these to be true, and given the effusiveness of the praise proffered so far, they appear to be.

Also, the credits cookie? I've done some research, and multiple sources seem to be confirming that it features the next (very) big bad. Spoilered, but I'm going to test your willpower:

Spoiler:
Really? You really want to know?

One last chance. Turn back now!

OK, here goes:

Thanos.

Sooooo, initial (non-spoilery) thoughts:

Funny as hell.

Epic.

Cobie Smulders is an embarrassingly bad actress.

First thirty, forty minutes could have used some more life (and trimming, and those two things are not mutually exclusive).

Still not sold on Loki as the villain. His motivations remain cloudy and unfocused.

Hulk steals the show.

With The Avengers (and a boost from Thor) Marvel has taken their films cosmic, and done so with aplomb.

I think we'll see a drastic decrease in the Nolanification of comic book movies, and a swerve toward embracing the four-color roots of the material.

Out of the entire cast, the one shoe-in you'd expect (Samuel L. Jackson) is actually the one who sleepwalks through his performance. We've all been excited about Jackson-as-Fury because it's literally perfect casting (as Ultimate Fury is based directly off of Jackson), but we've been so blinded by love of what he represented (namely, this movie) that we haven't noticed him sleepwalking through his performances...well, really since way back in 2008's Iron Man.

The best S.H.I.E.L.D. member is Agent Coulson, played by the always-dependable Clark Gregg.

Did I mention Hulk steals the show? Well he does. He also gets hands-down the biggest laugh in the film (you'll know it when you see it).

Scarlett Johansson is actually good! I'm shocked, seriously.

Renner is also good as Hawkeye, but obviously, the focus is on the main four: Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and Hulk. Hawkeye and Black Widow are mainly there to round out the cast a bit.

Would have preferred to have seen an A-list action director tackle Joss Whedon's fantastic script, but Whedon acquits himself well, even if he's not exactly James Cameron. I'd rather have a director who "gets" Whedon than one who doesn't, so Whedon himself seems a safer bet.

Everyone gets several Crowning Moment of Awesome moments. Fans of each character won't be disappointed.

I have a few niggling issues with the film, but in the wake of its awesomeness, they feel more like nitpicks (even though some are structure-based). This is truly a film that is much, much, much more than the sum of its parts.

Stay for the mid-credits credit cookie, and then stay for the post-credits cookie as well.

Excelsior!

Sounds good for what I was honestly expecting (at best) to be just a big old happy pile of special effects and one liners :) (not that there is anything wrong with that!)

If Loki's motives are ever crystal, one is probably misunderstanding them (in a manner Loki himself intended.)

I enjoyed it. I liked it. But damn if I never want to read endless praising reviews of any movie ever again. It was a bit too hyped for me.

But there were some very funny moments, especially the one FarSky references with Loki and the Hulk.

This movie was so awesome. I've thought about it, and I think the reason it's so good, is that because there are so many characters that have to get their time in, he basically boiled them down and gave us the best of each character.

I've only seen the one you mentioned in a spoiler earlier talked about, do you mind spoiling the other for me? Apparently I missed it because I can't recall there being another.

Spoiler:
Remember when, after the Hulk caught Iron Man and they were all sitting there recouperating, Tony said "Hey, anybody want to get XXXX? I hear it's like two blocks from here. I have no idea what it is, but I want it. Anyone?" and then they had to go take care of Loki, first?

The second tail scene, at the *very* end of the credits (rather than mid-credits) was the 6 of them sitting at one table in a greasy diner-lookin' place that's just empty, eating. No dialogue, not even much movement. I think Thor picks up his cheeseburger and takes a bite out of it. You can tell they're just completely exhausted and crashing. And the shot just sits there for like 90 seconds, like where a Family Guy joke will just keep going through where it stops being funny, and starts being funny again.

And if you aren't in the domestic market that scene probably isn't there, apparently it was added after the international version was done.
