The Innkeepers - long, slow, scary movie. Hard to recommend but it had moments.

Yeah. I liked Ti West's previous effort, House of the Devil better. Both had ending problems, IMO, but both were good rides (for the most part), very atmospheric and effective. But yeah, "slow burn" doesn't begin to describe his rather glacial pacing.

Saw PA 4 last night. Not as scary as the other three but still pretty good.

I just finished watching this at lunch. Started it yesterday. In the middle of the day. In my truck. And it still creeped/freaked me out. Well done.

Caught it last night, pretty good!

Ugh glacial is about right.

This one is worth it just for the last 20 minutes or so. If the first part of the movie was as good as the last, I'd give it better praise.

If the director had given a thought to sound, lighting and set design this film would've been very very good.

Bonus points for having Jinx though!

The Devil Inside: "true" story/documentary of an (omg!) exorcism. Very weak, no tension, no drama, no gross outs and no pop out scares. Just obvious and tedious retread of two genres that have been beaten to death.

Oh this movie had that kind of crap, just poorly done and at completely expected moments.

I disagree. While they didn't really break any new ground, I thought the movie was pretty good. My son and I saw it at the theater when it came out and we both enjoyed it.

The Thing (2011 Remake) - I didn't know I was watching the remake of this, I thought, "Wow the cinematography, score, effects have really aged well!"

<--- derp.

Anyways, a good sci-fi horror flick in the vein of Alien (not AlienS). I would recommend it not so much as a horror film but just a good sci-fi flick.

And I would strongly encourage anyone to just watch John Carpenter's 1982 version of The Thing.

Roger that. Even the original black and white is a quality movie(1951!).

They actually fit the 2011 remake to lead right into the original. Perfect double feature!

Ehhh...yes and no. It does fit perfectly...but the 2011 "prequel" is essentially a remake (though much less effective [CGI IS NOT SCARY]), so while they do click together well, the effect on a viewer trying to do a double-feature is getting into Carpenter's Thing and feeling a disheartening sense of deja vu.

The...I'm gonna call it a "premake" isn't bad, but it's only not bad in the way that CBS's Elementary isn't bad...it's such a carbon copy of a work that's truly great that you almost couldn't **** it up enough to make the remake bad. You'd have to aggressively work at such a feat. Given that it didn't have, say, a Uwe Boll at the helm, it comes across as a decent enough film, but a pale imitation (it's a Thing of The Thing!).

Below - Was a creepy movie about a haunted WWII Submarine. I thought it was paced well and had good characters (played by well cast b-actors) that had you shifting your sympathies throughout the film.

I'd recommend it.

Oh I agree, while they are too similar for comfort, I mainly meant they designed the ending of the premake (nice word) to play right into the beginning of the original. Although it's also nice to watch them back to back and realize that in this many years, CGI still holds no candle to good practical and stop motion animation. They should show them back to back for that reason alone! (to every studio exec that hates practical effects. a million times.)

Not what I would call a Scary Movie, but definitely interesting:

Musical Horror about the damned. I felt like it had a lot of similarities to Repo, and come to find out, it was produced by the same people.

Really ambitious, amazing costumes/makeup and set design, as well as some really fun music. Only about 60 minutes, worth a look if you like repo or any of the other things I've referenced. Apparently they're designing it as a short-form series.

For indie loving old-school 70's-80's late night b-movie fans only. I'm not sure if I liked it, but I'm definitely going to watch it again.

From Netflix:

"What is important is atmosphere, which the film absolutely nails through the basics of imagery, composition, set design, color scheme, performance, and the score. Beyond the Black Rainbow evokes a hallucinatory trance like state of uncompromising dread rarely achieved in cinema, reminiscent of the dream state terror tone of classics such as Eraserhead, The Shining, and Videodrome."

Also, I loved the score. Fit the mood perfectly, can't even imagine how the film would feel without it.

I guess the best praise I can give it is that I will definitely watch the next film by Panos Cosmatos, it was very ambitious and definitely had a vision.

Also, today on halloween, I would be remiss if I didn't point out that one of the most incredibly FC*#KGHED up movies I've seen in years is up on streaming.

Image

It is beautiful, and creepy, and will damage your brain (possibly permanently). I'm flashing back to some scenes as I type this. Man, need to watch this one again.

Episode 50 - This is a movie that would have benefitted from having a writer. I had high hopes going in but it failed on literally EVERY level it possibly could.

This is on Netflix now. Started watching it yesterday and like it so far.
