I know that was the point. I'm just saying - this aspect of the movie fails for little kids. I think the movie is much better for this - indeed it turns a lot of the normal Disney cliches on their heads. But those cliches exist for a reason - and is part of why Disney was so successful. Simple plots the whole family can enjoy.

I think you underestimate kids.

They never stop making good movies for long. They occasionally make three or four lacklustre movies in a row, but even that's rare. Their most recent slump was between 2004-2008, but Pixar's incredible offerings during that time more than made up for it.

I know that Pixar and Disney have a distribution deal, but I consider them separate, which is probably why I feel like Disney's been in a slump for so long. I've loved all the Pixar films (except Cars fell flat for me, never saw the second one). Prior to Tangled, the last film I felt was really great was "The Emperor's New Groove", which was 10 years before Tangled.

Not only that, but since 2007, Walt Disney Animation and Pixar Animation Studio have sharied their Chief Creative Officer: John Lasseter is ultimately in charge of both studios. (Note that Princess & the Frog broke the last Disney slump 2 years after Lasseter took over the job - which is the approximate length of time it takes to make a movie. I don't consider this a coincidence.) Still, I separated them for a reason. The studios are being merged more and more, sharing creative staff and resources, but they still make somewhat distinct movies in terms of theming from each other. Even those barriers are breaking down, though. Brave felt like a typical Disney movie, while Wreck-it Ralph was basically "Toy Story at the Arcade."

I... included "The Emperor's New Groove" because it got critical acclaim, but I didn't like it. (The same goes for Brother Bear.) Lilo & Stitch and Treasure Planet, however, were spectacular to me, and Princess & the Frog is hands down my favorite Disney movie ever (ranking slightly higher than Mulan).

Added Metacritic score for as far back as they go. I saw Princess and the Frog in theaters, but I don't remember it being great, other than the music and New Orleans design, I'll have to see it again. I had forgotten Disney eventually ponied up the dough for Pixar, wise choice on their part. Also, the Pixar influence probably explains why I like Wreck-it Ralph so much. Also, the Emperor's New Groove is basically a David Spade/Chris Farley buddy comedy in the vein of Tommy Boy or Black Sheep, with Goodman in the Farley role. So if you weren't a fan of those movies, you probably wouldn't like it either.

The Princess & the Frog had me right from the start, when Tiana's father (voiced by Terrence Howard) catches her wishing on a star, and tells her, "Yes, you wish and you dream with all your little heart. But you remember, Tiana, that old star can only take you part of the way. You got to help him with some hard work of your own. And then... Yeah, you can do anything you set you mind to. Just promise your Daddy one thing? That you'll never, ever lose sign what is really important. Okay?"

This is a marked difference. Sorry, Jiminy, but wishing ain't enough. And Tiana takes those words to heart, and as the main part of the movie starts, the adult Tiana has almost saved enough money for her dream through hard work and elbow-grease, but, she's forgotten how to have fun. The love story here is about a good natured prince who has no idea how to work (not because he's lazy, but because he's never had to do so), with a woman who has no idea how to slow down and enjoy life. The movie is about balance - about working hard to make your dreams come true, but also enjoying life along the way. Couple that with the most memorable villain since Hook back in the 1950's, and a great cast, and I can't say enough about this movie. I adore it. Frozen has continued the tradition of turning the Disney princess formula on its head, but P&tF started it.

It's funny, looking at those dates, I became a teenager right after Little Mermaid, and with the exception of Lion King (impossible to avoid) and Nightmare Before Christmas (awesome), I didn't see a single one of those movies until late 2000s when I had kids.

Does it seem to anyone else that they got this to DVD in record time. Good on them, or at least a start in the right direction.

With the Blu-ray released while the box office take was at $1.027 billion, though, it may spell the end for Frozen's theatrical run, and it doesn't look like it will catch Toy Story 3's $1.063 billion for the highest grossing animated film of all time.

I F-ed up and purchased this through FIOS on demand last week. So now I can't loan it to anyone or take it on a trip, etc.

Nothing wrong with that. If it were up to me, you could buy the DVD as you are walking out of the movie house. I may have to go out this weekend and get a copy of frozen just to show my support for closing the format release gap.
