heh.

I dunno what it is really. There's just something about it that's kinda awesome. They're generally well written, character driven, funny... not afraid to show that the characters have actual flaws...

Yeah, I was too. Definitely not their best work. Still, it did manage to have some moments.

I dunno, it felt kinda rushed. Sombra was never really anything more than "Oh, he's an evil unicorn that's all evil and stuff."

And too much was made about the crystal heart being not the real crystal heart.

I'd say 6/10. Nowhere near a Sonic Rainboom or Party of One. Much less a Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000 ;)

Yeah, Sombra got zero character development. And the character design itself...yeesh. I don't know what happened in the design department, but he looks like someone's terrible OC that was puked out by flash pony maker, tbh.

Thankfully the fandom is ready and able to supply me with plenty of head canon:

Srsly, though. My 8-year-old daughter watches the show.

It got me with an homage to Stephen Sondheim's "Putting it Together" (from Sunday in the Park With George).

People sling a lot of **** at them, but bronies are good peeps. What I've witnessed is a community being kind, generous, and uplifting to an extent I don't think I've ever witnessed on the internet. It's honestly made me rethink how I relate to other people, both on and offline, and what "community" really ought to look like.

Maybe that sounds overwrought, but it's true. You may come for the show but you'll wind up staying for the community. That's the real secret to the phenomenon. Bronies are a counter-cultural reaction -- a sort of communal rejection of jaded cynicism and group cohesion via mockery of others.

Even I have to admit that Daniel Ingram has done a really good job with the music, and my usual reaction to musical interludes is pretty much this. He's also a witty guy: the composition of the BBBFF song near the beginning of the season 2 finale contains a clever music theory joke that foreshadows the episode's main plot twist.

Edit:

Speaking of awesome fan-made things:

We meet again, Dead Island trailer theme song.

Ugh. Right in the feels.

What about the "Deceptive Cadence" from This Day Aria?

http://www.equestrianbeat.com/2012/04/d ... -news.html

Quote:
Alright, so, we already all know how Daniel Ingram, the man behind the show's amazing songs, is a genius. However, there's been a bit of text floating around the internet since the new episodes aired, and for some reason, I hadn't thought to put it up here on EqR until just now! I have no idea why, but it fits so well on our little music site. By the way, this is all referring to "This Day Aria," which is sung by Princess Cadence and Chrysalis disguised as Cadence.

"The song's key is Db Major. That means that the root chord is a Db major chord. Usually, an Ab major chord will lead into a Db major. This is the V-I chord progression, and it is known as the Authentic Cadence. Now, it seems to resolve to a sadder chord at the end of the phrase. Instead of ending on Db major, it lands on Bb minor: the relative minor of Db major. When a chord progression seems to be heading to the root chord, but lands on the relative minor, that is called... Deceptive Cadence."

And soon after, Mr. Ingram was asked about this discovery via his Twitter account or something. I only saw a screencap of the actual post, and I don't use sites like that enough to recognize it right off the bat. Anyway, he did confirm this as intentional. When Cadence sang, it was an Authentic Cadence. When Chrysalis sang, it was a Deceptive Cadence.

Daniel Ingram, you are my hero.

How about a The Music Man homage? (At least I *think* that's what they're homaging.)

This one is *easily* my favorite song from the series.

But then again, who *doesn't* like patter songs? :)

Right description, wrong song. It's actually the BBBFF song at the beginning of the episode; I'm not sure how/why, but a bunch of places mis-reported that. This is the original post by the guy who noticed it.

What you're listening for are the two "forever"s at the end of the song. The first moves from V->I, which is closed or authentic cadence. When you hear that progression at the end of a phrase, the phrase or song sounds complete. The second forever starts off the same way, moving through the V chord like before, but at the last second adds this little trill that ultimately lands on the VI chord (relative minor) instead of the I chord like your ear expects. This is deceptive cadence. It's also an example of weak cadence because of the open, unresolved sound. We don't really expect the song to end right there.

It gets better: that little vocal flourish at the end of the second "forever"? That's called a cadenza. And this particular cadenza happens to consist of the first few notes of the MLP theme song.

Yes, that is what they're doing. "Ya Got Trouble". :)

And I love the Aria. :)

EDIT: fixed song title.
