I remember being a senior in high school, coming home and turning on HBO as a movie was starting. I got "The following movie is rated R." I remember thinking, "Sweet. Time to relax and enjoy a little bit of HBO T&A." This was in a time before they let you know exactly why a movie was rated what it was rated.

The movie began and it started out like a horror movie. I could instantly tell it was made in the '80s. The very early '80s (1981, in fact). But the more I watched this horror film, the more I found it very funny. It was an obvious spoof of the horror craze that had swept the nation in the early '80s.

But the more I watched, the more I realized there wasn't any swearing. There wasn't any blood. And (worst of all) there wasn't any boobies. My mind was beginning to wonder just why in the hell this movie was rated R. Was it some really nasty (or boobily awesome) payoff? Was it mis-rated? I was enthralled. I had to know.

But the more I watched, the more I realized that the movie was genuinely funny and worthy of even quoting afterwards. It could have been that I was a tired and exhausted teenager, but even today I smile at several scenes.

Then finally, I saw why the movie was rated R. The reason for the rating itself was actually a bit of satire as well, and a jab at the movie industry and other movies (specifically ones who go out of their way to make a movie have the R rating). It made me laugh.

If you can find it on DVD (a quick search reveals it was finally released) I'd recommend giving it a watch. The movie is called "Student Bodies." And, trust me, don't go in expecting boobies. You will get none. But you will get a great airplane-ish spoof on the horror genre of the 70s and 80s.

Ah yes, that was an excellently awful film Numbuk. It was like MST3K made an actual feature film.

"Malferd pee red", right?

If that's the movie I'm thinking of, I thought there was a seen in the girls locker room/shower? It's been 25 years since I've seen it though...

Yeah that's the one. I can almost promise there wasn't any nudity in the film. My pre-internet teenage hormones would have remembered.

Dead Snow -

Not sure how this was to be taken. It seemed as if it were meant to be campy but there were parts that were almost Jaws-like in its build-up and suspense. Overall I'd recommend it if you like an army of Nazi zombies.

Friday the 13th (2009 Remake)
- Had some jumpy parts, totally betrayed the original and should not be considered part of the canon IMHO. Overall though not terrible. Very reminiscent of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre without the torture.

My Bloody Valentine (2009 remake) - Decent film, had me guessing as to who the killer was. Chock it up to an OK slasher film.

Clive Barker's Book of Blood (2008) - Caught it on Syfy, still disturbing. Nice and gory, and a pretty good story.

Paranormal Activity went up for streaming on Netflix on the 9th. I gave it my first watch.

I will say that I was completely on-board with this movie until the very, very, very last scene. Then I read that Hollywood added a different ending with a little more special effects. Yep. That's what did it.

After reading over what the original ending was, and what the "special" ending was, both sound FAR superior than the theatrical ending (especially the "special" ending).

Other than that though, I'd still recommend it. I'd doubly recommend watching it alone, at night, with all the lights off, on a couch at the top of a bunch of stairs, with your back against the stairway leading down into the lower levels of the house.

Spoiler:
The one thing I was hoping to see, that would have been a the icing on the cake, is super quick shot of the demon. Nothing detailed, but something that's physically there and something so quick you couldn't get a good look at it. That would have really put this movie over the top. Still, very well done for the budget and far superior-acted than Blair Witch.

Yup, other than the tacked on hollywood ending, this movie was awesome. In the theater it was EXTRA creepy.

The DVD includes at least one other alternate ending, possibly two. Neither wowed me :(

This. I could tolerate the rest of the movie, but I didn't really care for either ending that I saw. Everything else was okay.

Spoiler:
The ending that I read about where she slits her own throat, to me, seems the best bookend for this movie. Especially when you think back to the boyfriend saying and gesturing that he was going to do that to the demon earlier on in the movie. That, and it keeps the whole thing in the realm of mysterious-creepy.

The whole, "Watch my face contort as I attack the camera" seemed so unlike the demon's M.O. that they built up. If it didn't like the camera, it would have trashed it the first night. He spent 20 years toying with the girl. He gets maximum enjoyment from toying with people. It would have been better if she/it had just smiled at the camera and walked away, at the very least.

Watched Phatasm I - IV.

Good series that doesn't take itself too seriously and evolves while paying homage to its roots. Plot holes be damned.

Cursed:

Loved it. Decent cast with decent acting and a really good script. Reminded me a lot of The Lost Boys. 5/5 for me.

Bitten:

Vampire flick starring Jason Mewes (Jay from Silent Bob fame). Soft core pornish. Trying for the funny, failing pretty hard, maybe if I was high.

Was this the one with Christina Ricci? If so, then yea, I liked that one, too. Didn't take it self too seriously, but wasn't too campy, either.

Ginger Snaps:
Great film. Not scary per se (werewolf movies seldom are) but good plot line. Heavy on the metaphors but all werewolf movies are.

Ginger Snaps Back: The beginning
Meh. I was underwhelmed. Production value was low but the werewolves were better than the CGI from the first one.

Creepshow 3:
Series of vignettes. Terrible, awful, they remind me of 15-20 minute episodes of "Behind the Scary Door" from Futurama. Interestingly I cannot find a Creepshow 2 in Netflix.

Babysitter Wanted:
I was seriously worried that this was going to be torture pr0n and to a lesser degree it was. Took forever to build up, the ending was pretty obvious but it had a slight twist.

I haven't been keeping up with this whole thread, and I'm not sure if it counts as the kind of flick you'd call "scary," but Jacob's Ladder seriously scared the hell out of me about 20 years ago.

Agreed. Definate freakiness to it; a little more of the psychological variety.

Yup, that's a classic there. Unfortunately it's been imitated about a thousand times now, but still good stuff.
