I've been watching a lot of stand-up on Youtube, and I've realized, that with a few rare exceptions (George Carlin, Robin Williams, Chris Rock, and Louis CK), the American comedians aren't always the ones that keep me laughing the hardest. I don't know if it's a cultural thing or not (Not Canadian culture, either, possibly my Irish parents), but I'm finding that comedy across the pond is generally funnier.

My favorite comedians:

1. George Carlin (I'm sure he'll never leave this list.)
2. Russell Peters
3. Dara O'Briain
4. Jimmy Carr

There have been so many others I've found funny: Frankie Boyle, Stephen Fry, Steve Martin, Robin Williams, 80's Eddie Murphy stuff, Johnny Carson (although, he was funnier in a guest interview than in his standup), Bill Cosby, Chris Rock... but some are just a cut above. Guys like Sandler or Romano were never that funny to me...in fact, I can't stand to listen to them. Even Jerry Seinfeld is rarely more than a few chuckles.

Who are your favorites?

Jim Gaffigan
Richard Jeni
Eddie Izzard
Mitch Hedberg

Might add some more later, but these guys have made me cry laughing at times (well maybe not Hedberg, but still...)

Patton Oswalt
Brian Posehn (my wife and I quote the "Mexican Baby" bit often to ourselves at theaters)

And ones that I've seen in person that I found hysterical
Michael Ian Black
Chris Hardwick

With Chris Hardwick I was able to secure seats right up front and I made the comment to my wife that we were close enough to spit on. But ironically, I was one of the folks in the audience he decided to incorporate into his act and get extremely close and personal (physically) with. And he ended up spitting (accidentally) on me, which he then proceeded to humorously apologize and wipe it in further.

I do, but I don't really consider him a stand up comic, he's really more of a variety act which is why I didn't include him in my list.

I have a hard time listening to his songs for very long, but he's quite funny.

IMHO, this is his best work.

You just reminded me to add Stephen Lynch to the list.

Gabriel Iglesias is hilarious. He basically describes my world down here. Try "chocoate made me late." Bill Cosby and Chris Rock are pretty funny. Other than that I tend to like local unknowns.

I think my all time favorite skit of his is the racist gift basket, but any of his cop stories are also a hoot.
